John B. Fischer over at The Atlantic wants to explore the question "Is it morally acceptable to love machine guns?"
He wonders, how can one love guns knowing they kill people in this "era of mass violence"?
Fischer asks this question while visiting and participating in Oklahoma's Full Auto Shoot and Trade Show (OFASTS).
I came here to answer a question: Why do people find it fun to attend a festival where they can shoot the countrys most powerful civilian weaponry during a time of mass violence? In many peoples view, gun ownership is integral to Americas cultural identity. But guns also cause a significant number of preventable deaths every year. So OFASTS offers a distinctive combination of recreation and regulation: Fans of automatic weapons have the chance to use some of the most heavily tracked armaments in the country, in an environment akin to a county fair.
The answer to that question, as Fischer finds out, is because it is fun. Or as he describes, "Plus, as I discovered, shooting was a genuine thrillnot unlike the adrenaline rush of driving a car at illegally high speeds."

Yup. About 19,000 out of the 32,000. Wish they’d do the garage/running car scenario.
Apparently I erred on searching the OP’s misidentification of the writer. It was Liz Sheld, no Liz Shields. As an earlier poster indicated THIS Liz Sheld is somehow pro-gun, but it is a little cryptic to me. Maybe because I’m just a dumbass country boy as my wife always tells me.
My bad, mea culpa - so sorry. But I will add that in my search of Liz Shields and anti-gun, image, what I posted came up.
“She should worry more about the health effects of all those canolis shes throwing down her pie hole.”
Probably more likely an over generous helping of Knishes or Cheese Blintzes!
Normally, not my style of car, but this thing was gorgeous. The lines were PERFECT. The paint like glass. The interior like it came out of the showroom.
Cue Belushi screaming.
Things I love that have killed people; cars, guns, electricity, petroleum, bicycles, weights, cutlery oh and let’s be really fun here.
Peanut butter, raspberries, shellfish and bees!
BEES!!!!! BEES!!!!!
I don’t know where I got Joel as the author of this drivel.
But my comment about the penis stands ...
Gee, then the author must hate the Marines, the Navy, the Army, the Air Force
And of course, everyone in the Pentagon, Defense Dept, etc
The hate must be everywhere
If Guns kill, then every one of mine is defective.
“...the penis stands.” Too much info IronJack. LOL!
A very well stated reason, the single most important one,was published some years ago quoting a very well known national figure.
"Certainly one of the chief guarantees of freedom under any government, no matter how popular and respected, is the right of citizens to keep and bear arms. This is not to say that firearms should not be very carefully used, and that definite safety rules of precaution should not be taught and enforced. But the right of citizens to bear arms is just one more guarantee against arbitrary government, one more safeguard against tyranny which now appears remote in America, but which historically has proved to be always possible"
Yes,boys and girls...it was Hubert H Humphrey who said this.
People fear guns because they make loud noises, not because they claim so many lives.

I think you’re on to something.
Yup. In 7th grade Civic class (whatever that is today) I supported HHH as part of the class assignment because of this stance. What was that 1960? Hoo Lee Crap. Thas a long time ago.
She's a beaut... Not my style, either, I prefer 40s anything, and muscle cars, but very nicely done.
Especially people from Chicago.
Machine guns save people. Blacks would have avoided lynching by democrats as a minority if they had been thus equipped
NONE of the CHICAGO shootings were done by NRA members.
NONE. ZERO. (Probably NEVER!)
Yes,IIRC it was 1960.Imagine that clown Franken taking such a position.Of course he supports *his* right to keep and bear arms...but not *ours*.
