Courts Will Rule Whether Thousands of Kansas Residents Can Vote

TOPEKA, Kan. - For years, Kris Kobach has fought against illegal immigration. He helped write two of the nation's most strict immigration laws in Arizona and Alabama and helped develop a now-defunct national immigration security system.

Now Kobach, the Republican secretary of state for Kansas, is embroiled in court fights over his repeated attempts to require Kansans to provide proof of citizenship to register to vote. Although he has repeatedly lost in court, one case that remains open will determine whether thousands of Kansans will be able to vote in November's local and state elections.

“If you’re willing to go out and vote, you should be allowed to, even if you’re in this country not as a citizen,” Panek said. “If you’re gonna go out and make that effort, you should be allowed to.”

*******************************

What an idiot.

Citizens only.

One of the people in the article is a 21-year old woman who is studying journalism and gender and sexuality studies. Journalism, I can understand. Journalism is key to society. But why study gender and sexuality studies?

You seen the job market for journalism majors these days?

“But why study gender and sexuality studies?”

Easy A. Used to be called “fluff classes”.

“Can anyone tell me what job you can get with gender and sexuality studies?”

You can become a teacher in the subject... or a “diversity advisor”... or a journalist... or a government employee... or a professional agitator.

in November's local and state elections.

In this November's *local and state elections*? Is that to say there will be two separate polling days in Kansas this November? One for the US House, the US Senate (if either of their Senators are up this year) and President and another for Governor, state legislature, etc?

Sounds like the author is either of very limited IQ or he/she/it is engaging in deliberate deception.

Hey, if you’re a good writer, good communicator, you could land a job at a local TV station, paper, social media site, etc.

But the gender studies crap I don’t understand.

NBC did not fail me. Instead of illegal aliens hiding in Kansas or even illegal residents, which they are, they used the word residents to try to hide them so the public will look down on trying to stop them from voting. NBC should be ashamed of these type of lies. I believe it was NBC or CBS that doctored the George Zimmerman tapes hiding his injuries when he arrived at the police station.

This type of crap happens all the time and they need to be called on it for just sheer dishonesty. Something I hope Trump will do and put in action for other conservatives.

OK, I'll bite. This article references 2 individuals who are in college in Kansas but reside in other states, who apparently tried to register to vote in Kansas.

My oldest son is currently in college in Kentucky, but resides in Ohio. For the upcoming election, he has requested an absentee ballot so he will, in effect, vote in his home state.

What is wrong with these 2 that they cannot follow these established guidelines? Do their home states not have absentee voting?

If we are going to allow foreigners vote why not allow Italians in Italy, Germans in Germany, Russias,...anyone on earth. They seem to be saying our borders are meaningless why can’t anyone on earth vote the U.S. elections?

They want to be able to vote in BOTH states.

That’s what hundreds of New York liberals who own a summer home in Florida did during the Bush/Gore election.

Yes, and they'll fill those out, too. They're trying to vote twice (or more), in two different jurisdictions.

It is insanity for this to even be in question.

The court seems to be ignoring the following about constitutionally enumerated voting rights. The states have never amended the Constitution to prohibit themselves from prohibiting people who cannot prove citizenship from voting.

In fact, note that a previous generation of state sovereignty-respecting justices had clarified in Minor v. Happersett that the right to vote is not an automatic right of citizenship.

So other than activist judges who wrongly stop the states from requiring that people prove citizenship before being allowed to vote imo, there’s nothing in the Constituton stopping the states from prohibiting people who cannot prove citizenship from voting.
