Massive Cover-Up Exposed: Lying Alarmists Rebranded 70s Global Cooling Scare as a Myth
Breitbart ^ | 14 Sep 2016 | James Delingpole

Everyone knows that before the global warming scare began in the 1980s, scientists were much more worried about global cooling and the coming ice age.

At least everybody did till a cabal of lying climate alarmists – one then a senior administrator at NOAA, now a president at the World Meteorological Association – hijacked Wikipedia, published a lying paper, and rewrote history by painting the 1970s Global Cooling Scare as an urban myth.

During my elementary school days near Fresno, the scam was the ozone hole caused by refrigerants, body spray/hair spray propellant and a host of other claptrap.
Moonbeam J Brown had all of us kids waiting for a hole to open up in the sky then the sun scorching us with death rays.

I guess one must look for back issues from the 1970s of various publications that warned of glo-bull cooling! I remember several articles about it at that time. The one I really remembered was around 1975 in which PROGRESSIVE FARMER magazine warned farmers to get ready to plant crops in the South than were normally grown in Illinois because the coming ice age would make the north too cold for such crops.

A few years ago PROGRESSIVE FARMER warned of Glo-bull Warming! I wrote them a letter and asked if the magazine was still relevant since they had predicted a new ice age forty years ago and now were on the Glo=Bull Warming bandwagon.

After fifty five years of taking the magazine I dropped my subscription.

Alvin Toeffler of “Future Shock” fame was a principal leader of the new Ice Age scare.

Oddly enough, your graph is also proof that the media is biased.

Depends on when the government grants became available.
That is the whole point of the politicized science.
The government funds the ‘science’ then uses the results to extend its power.

The enviro wackos play it both ways: global warming will lead to global cooling.

To wit the tragicomedy: “The Day After Tomorrow”.

I always laugh when Americans descend south into Mexico and are welcomed in the spirit of friendship and cooperation. Yeah, right. It is after all “fiction.”

I’ll be darned.

The creators of the myth even went so far as to create false TIME magazine covers.

The sneaky dastards!

Actually, the hole was real. The cause was at least partly CFCs, but it closed way faster than anyone predicted after the ban, suggesting that the models were wrong, that the cause was due to other factors, or some combination thereof.

If the sun continues it’s inactivity much longer they’re going to have to try
to switch back to Global Cooling doomerism.

That should be fun to watch.

“ice core samples”

Not quite correct. When an ice age is over, the ice melts, so there is no ice record of prior ice ages.

“Ice ages” should not be confused with “glaciations”. That misdirection is part of the disinformation put out by the climate change lefties.

Geologists define an ice age as when there is ice 24x7x365 at sea level, somewhere on the globe. If I recollect correctly, there have only been about 4 or 5 and we are currently in one, which has been in existence for 4 million years.

WITHIN an ice age are “glaciations” where the ice advances significantly. In the current ice age, there have been 60 of those so far. They are identified in the geologic record by “moraine” layers where the advancing ice has ground up boulders, etc..

The last such glaciation reached its maximum extent about 15,000 yrs ago (wooly mammoth time) and is what most people, incorrectly, call the last ice age.

On average (4 mill / 60) gives a 66,000 year glaciation cycle, with ice advancing in the first part, and receding in the last.

So, based on averages, we would be about halfway through a receding glaciation.

So they are right when they say it’s trending warmer in the long, but what they are hiding is that that’s to be expected and nothing to be alarmed about.

In fact, in case you haven’t noticed, there’s a lot more life in the warmer parts of the globe and a lot less in the great chilly willy.

We would, in fact, be much better off being warmer.

Note, deserts are the absence of water, not the absence of heat. Obviously not much life in the Sahara, but plenty in the Congo, Rainforest, etc..

And there is NOTHING we can do about it. If we could throttle the global temperature by controlling carbon emissions, how about making it a comfortable year round 78?

Ridiculous, right? And so is the AGW crowd.

p.s. per ANTarctic ice cores, the continent was further north in the prior non-ice age period.

He may have been. Much about his book that I'm aware of was on the sensational side.

From the years of study I've done on AGW and historical geology I'm strongly inclined to believe we're headed into another glacial cycle, not long-term warming. They can arrive with disturbing speed, at least in terms of geological time. But it does no good to get all excited about either warming or cooling.

The planet has its own thermostat, affected by a multitude of different influences from plate tectonics to axial tilt to orbital variations to sunspot cycles. All we pitiful humans can do is adapt -- or try to -- to whatever comes along. It's totally out of our control.

I can remember attending a scientific conference, back in the 1970s, at which a Nobel laureate speaker warned us about "the coming ice ages." That's not a myth, urban or otherwise. A lot of big name scientists were concerned that more ice ages were coming, and they were going public with their concerns.

All of western civilization, the development of agriculture, the creation of cities and empires, has taken place in an unusual patch of fair weather. The Earth has spent a lot longer in ice than in sunny climes. We are in an interglacial period which could end at any moment. (Moments being about 20,000 years long.) We are a lot closer to ice sheets than rising sea levels.

I think the government ought to insist we all buy SUV’s that get 12 miles per gallon with a goal of achieving five miles per gallon in 20 years.

Actually based upon the Greenland Ice Core samples done in the early 90s the onset of an ice age can happen within a decade. Something to ponder.
