The same thing happened in Asbury Park, NJ. Burned out in 1971 riots, it didn’t begin to recover until about ten years ago. Gays came in, helped to gentrify, and blacks are more marginalized that ever in the worst part of town (the westside).
In late 67 and early 68 we were doing riot training at Fort Bragg, NC. We were told to not wear our berets if called up. We never were as the 82nd was. The 82nd Airborne flat cleaned out any Detroit punk who was shooting.
