CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton on Wednesday made a rare stand on social issues, spending a majority of his news conference addressing Tuesday's shooting in Charlotte that turned to racial unrest.
"I'm an African-American and I'm not happy how the justice has been dealt with over the years, and the state of oppression in our community,'' the NFL MVP said. "But we also as black people have to do right by ourselves. We can't be hypocrites. It starts with everybody holding each other accountable. And I say that on one voice and also another voice that when you go public or when things happen in the community, it's not the fact that things are happening, it's the way they are being treated after they happen."
Late Tuesday afternoon, a black Charlotte police officer shot and killed Keith Lamont Scott, also black, in an apartment complex parking lot about 15 minutes from Bank of America Stadium. The police said Scott exited his vehicle carrying a gun. Scott's family said he was unarmed and sitting in his car, reading a book, while waiting for his son to come home from school. Protests involving hundreds on Tuesday night turned to violence. Rocks were thrown, police vehicles were vandalized and fires were set. Sixteen police offers reportedly were injured.
"It could have happened in Atlanta. It could have happened in Los Angeles. It doesn't matter,'' Newton said. "It's embarrassing for things to keep happening. And from what I do know we had an incident that happened in 2013 that had something to do with the police and it went to jury and whatever, it got washed away in time...''

Cam Newton, like so many of today's celebrities, shows his utter disregard for justice, the rule of law, and authority. Why isn't Mr. Newton speaking out against black on black tribal-like violence which is near epidemic proportions in America? Why isn't Mr. Newton concerned about the fact that over 50% of violent crimes in America are committed by young black men who constitute 7% of the population? Why isn't Mr. Newton addressing the breakdown of the black family which is the root cause of most of the black community's problems?
As long as the money keeps pouring in, tribe is more important that truth. Tribe is more important than rules, law, and authority. Cam, Colin, and the other millionaire sons of Obama know that there is no racism in America, otherwise they would not be worshipped and adulated as football gods (and voted in as President)!? Yet they speak vanity to show the tribe that they are "down with the struggle". With a double heart they flatter the rioters to keep people buying their jerseys, and voting for them. They speak foolishly and deceitfully not realizing that God will judge them for every word that they utter, for by our words will we be justified, or by our words we will be condemned...by the God of Truth, Justice, and the Rule of Law.

You apparently didn’t read his comments. Cam has handled this as well as anyone in his position could. He has called for accountability and responsibility in the African American community. He has called for restraint rather than anger
More over the headline is inaccurate. Bye did not speak out against. He was asked to comment. Mr Newton continues to impress me with his poise and thoughtfulness.

How is any of this sh*t the fault of honest business owners who are working and trying to make an honest living? Why doesn’t someone address the outright destruction and robbery of their property?
I assume if he is SO concerned about the “Oppression” he can give up his mega millions that he makes for throwing a ball around..he can give that money to the inner city instead, help his fellow “brothers and sisters” out, we got ourselves a deal Cam?
The cop was black. If the cop killed the civilian wrongly then he commited a crime... EVEN THIS WOULD BE ANOTHER EXAMPLE OF BLACK ON BLACK CRIME!!!

Good point. His assertion “I’m an African-American and I’m not happy how the justice has been dealt with over the years, and the state of oppression in our community,’’ belies a guy at best talking out of both sides of his mouth. As you state the claim of oppression is particularly telling.
You didn’t actually bother to read what he said did you? He actually did speak out on that:

Yeah all I had to do was read the “Oppression” part to say “OH HERE WE GO AGAIN” yeah, Blacks are being oppressed due to Democrat policies that keep them that way on PURPOSE
