Square grouper is what I heard they were called, but with the money he was making I really doubt that’s what he was doing. He probably WAS fishing and maybe drinking he may have been coming back after fishing for swordfish which is often done at night.
This time of year the mangrove snapper bite only gets better after dark,yellowtail are a good bet, mutton snapper are available,porgies,stray kingfish,there is a lot you can catch at night.
We called them moon groupers as well in my era because they fell from the sky or at least were tossed from the deck of a freighter
