There may have been an element of winning by losing in Trump’s strategy. By being much milder on substance than he needed to be, where even undecided voters knew he could have been more aggressive, Trump may have won on the most important question of the debate. Trump had to prove he is “presidential”, which includes measured and controlled, By holding back, Trump proved exactly that point. He, or his team, can release comments of that nature later, if they want to bother. They could not prove his restraint later.
It doesn’t matter - just like polls - it’s a sample size.
