I watched last night's debate on mute. Here's who won

"You shut your mouth when you're talking to me." So goes the line from the classic American film "Wedding Crashers." A line that I took to heart as I watched a good chunk of Monday night's presidential debate on mute.

Why? Not because I couldn't bear to hear what the candidates said. Instead, I wanted to analyze the nonverbals (which go a long way to determining likability) without distraction. Yes, optics matter.

Darn tootin’ a grammatical error or wrong usage of a common English word discredits everything else written.

The accuracy of the writing is a direct indication of both effort and intellect

I totally agree, Rocker. FReepers are not making a living writing to impress people. When I see errors in an article by a journalist, I discount it AND its author entirely.

I think she was trying to channel Margaret Thatcher with the hairdo. Her makeup looked like it was applied by an embalmer.

"If visual appeal matters, I want to see something flattering on a woman."

The designer to come up with that for Hildabeast will be awarded the moniker of greatest clothes designer EVER!!!

"The most telling part was the end where Trump walks right by Lester without shaking his hand."

I’m glad somebody mentioned Trump waling past Holt. Surely there is a better link, but I found the following clip of this incident.

Watch: Hillary Clinton shook Lester Holt's hand at the end of the debate. Trump did not. (Might need to scroll down)

[[Her red pantsuit... terrible optics.

Red is an angry color. It doesn’t wear well on a woman.]]

Red does not wear well on BLONDE women with warm skin tones . It wears very well on brunettes and women with cool skin tones.

[[What was she thinking? If visual appeal matters, I want to see something flattering on a woman.]]

You can say that with just about anything she wears.
She has terrible taste in clothing.

[[Hillary lost the debate in terms of what people saw alone]]

A hope you are so right about this .

Exactly. H tried to beat him there and make him appear to be like some schoolboy waiting in line. He just strolled right by. Even from behind you could see Lester was thrown off.

LOL. that has become the prig point of the day. I doubt you knew it a week ago. Podium is in common usage today. It’s like “bullet” instead of “cartridge”.

Tell 99% of people to point at the podium and they will point at the “lectern”. But nice attempt to hijack a thread.

And Hillary ostentatiously turned AWAY from Trump as he stood waiting. Trump got the message.

Given her Depends issues, you can bet a 90 minute session gave her a lot of concerns about “trickle down”.

Actually, I have 23 years in Toastmasters, and high school debate years before that. No need to insulting.

If that’s all it takes to hijack a thread, it’s a pretty lame thread.

Well, the content wasn’t any great shakes, either. Nothing anyone who hadn’t decided the winner/loser before the thing even happened couldn’t see.

Red suit means conservative, claiming her “victory” over conservatives. By contrast, it was interesting that HE wore a blue tie...symbol of taking over “liberal” territory. Odd coincidence. Wonder if coordinated. Maybe someone saw her come out of the green room and got him the blue because she had claimed red.

I am amazed at the people who aren’t bugged by improper use of the English language. The occasional misspelling or minor error on a board post is one thing, writing for a official publication under a byline is another. If someone can’t be bothered to put in the effort to use language correctly why should anyone care about what they think or observe?

I noticed the same thing and drew pretty much the same conclusions. Perhaps the most interesting visual of the evening.

She had more make up on than the mother vampire in The Strain.

I told my friend her fake eyelashes are soo distracting-- it looked like spiders crawling around on her eyes, or trying to eat them or something.

“She was not her normal self.”

Define normal for Illiarily!

She reminds me of that old line in young Frankenstein, “She has an “abbynormal mind.”

As an Internet-only guy I tend to miss things like television-face critiques, and so I was astonished to hear the conversation going on in the back of the room at work this morning among some folks who are usually pretty liberal. I don't recall a single policy point mentioned, only how bad Her Heinous looked and how phony and overbearing and condescending she came across. One of the ladies offered the defense that she had to do that to compete with an alpha-male type and another replied, "if my boss did that to me I'd slap her face." Whoa.

She also said that Trump came across as the sort of boss you could talk to, (which he does because that's what he is). And the consensus was that he'd won the debate. These were liberals.

Mind you, this is not the sort of analysis we usually indulge in on FR nor is it the sort of thing that comes out of most pundits' mouths, although the PR guy who is the author of this piece is definitely referring to it. It is, however, in common currency among voters. Very interesting reactions I'm seeing, not at all what I expected.
