WASHINGTON – The Obama administration announced Wednesday that it is sending another 600 troops to Iraq, raising the U.S. military presence in that war-torn country to some 5,000 American soldiers and special forces.
Secretary of Defense Ashton Carter announced the additional troops. He said, “The coalition to defeat ISIL continues to achieve results on the battlefield, and I congratulate Iraqi security forces on their recent progress, including the operation to free Sharqat. The coalition will continue to increase the pressure on ISIL in Mosul and wherever it seeks refuge in Iraq.
“In anticipation of the Mosul fight, the United States and the government of Iraq have agreed that additional U.S. and coalition capabilities could help accelerate the campaign at this critical phase. At the request of myself and Chairman (James) Dunford, and with the support and approval of Prime Minister Abadi, President Obama has authorized approximately 600 additional U.S. troops to further enable Iraqi forces.
“The troops, in close coordination with the government of Iraq, will provide specific capabilities including logistics and maintenance support; train, advise and assist teams for Iraqi Security Forces and Kurdish Peshmerga for the upcoming Mosul operation; and expanded intelligence resources to help disrupt ISIL's terrorist network in Iraq and beyond.
“The United States will continue to stay in close contact with our Iraqi partners as efforts to retake Mosul progress, including the role that the international coalition can continue to play in helping the Iraqi government defeat ISIL,” Carter added.

Curious. Did anyone notice Petraeus pointed out that we didn’t leave 10,000 because they would not have SOFA protection so we left and Iraq purged the Sunnis and ISIS moved into Iraq. So now we have 6,000 in Iraq and no SOFA. I mean he just laid the mess at Zero’s feet. I thought he had turned Rat. What happened?

And consider this. When we left there was a coalition of Kurds, Sunni, and Shia. As soon as we left they purged the Sunni and Kurds. So what we now have is Shia Iran and Shia Iraq fighting Sunni ISIS with the Kurds having, for the moment, only ISIS trying to kill them.
Let us look just two years down the road. Assuming we accomplish our stated goal of “crushing ISIS”. What have we accomplished? We will have Shia Iran, Shia Iraq, essentially Shia Syria, and as I recall Shia Turkey. We know the border between Iran and Iraq is fiction at this point. We know regiments of the Iranian Republican Guard are fighting ISIS in Iraq.
Am I the only one who sees a potential problem here? We currently have a tiny group of violent lunatics that calls itself “The Caliphate” who are doing their damnedest to provoke us and we are going to trade that for a HUGE swath of the Middle East that is almost all Shia and most hate us. From the Bosporous to the Persian Straits. Can we just assume they are going to form an alliance? Can we just assume there is a leader in there somewhere who might like the title “Caliph?”. Maybe some one like Erdogan?
Logically, were I in charge, I would conclude the best course is get out altogether. Now. Surround the region with an Iron Curtain. We can do this now or we can wait a couple years after we have squandered who knows how much blood and treasure only to accomplish whose goals and realize down the road we have to do it later after wasting resources helping Shia take over the Middle East.
Remember just WHO the Shia are? (Tsun Tzu, know the enemy). They got started because their original leader felt THE REST OF ISLAM WAS NOT FUNDAMENTAL ENOUGH. So if Islam is a religion of deranged murderers the Shia are a subset of even MORE deranged murderers.
5,000 would likely have been an adequate number to put the kebash on the formation and success of the Junior Varsity.
And 5000 is just the troops. Support contractors and oother civilian personnel can bring that number to 20,000 or so.
Just the right number to sit helplessly lose a bunch in a car bombing or ambush.
Wow - its a good thing Obama and Clinton got us out of the Iraq war!!!
