Gee, I have some guesses but they will say he’s Hispanic.

You reckon Ahal muhumud akbar is Mexican?

The gentleman,Mike Larson, being interviewed by Fox news now says there was a terrible explosion. He first said “bomb” then said “loud explosion”. I think he works at the station.

It sounded like Mike Larson said it sounded like and explosion, he said he knew it wasn’t a bomb - but the impact of the train hitting the stop, and everything else, sounded like an explosion.

You’re detailed outline of the system accuratey tracks my understanding of it.

Still, I must ask, if the signal to dump is interrupted, what happens?

It could be interrupted in any number of ways, something as crude as a cut wire, or a hidden battery to keep the lines powered when they aren’t supposed to be, or as sophisticated as a few lines of code to suspend normal operation, or as low tech as a suicide driver failing to apply brakes while chanting ‘my god is greater that your God’.

No, or impaired braking, that’s what happens.

Followed by a literal train wreck!

About a quarter mile out or so from the station, the trains slow to a crawl or even stop, then crawl into the station. The trains are about two feet lower than the concrete walking area. There are substantial iron and concrete barriers where the track ends, then a 30-40 foot wide pedestrian area before you get to the building. For this train to reach the building it had to roar into the station. Everybody would have known something was wrong a few seconds before impact. Hopefully that helped them scatter, though at that time in the morning with that many people it might have been difficult to get out of the way. Then, it looks like the iron roof collapsed over the station.

Yeah, when I worked in Jersey City, I used to walk to Hoboken on my lunch hour using the walkway along the Hudson - a very nice walk.

You came eventually to the Light Rail station, and then the adjoining commuter train station. It is very simple, just a roofed-over area with steel girders and about twenty tracks. It serves a number of commuter lines coming from various directions.

The station had a lot of damage from Sandy, and the fancy building and stores are still being redone. I think the old 19th-century waiting room is still accessible.

The PATH station is to the north, and there are several entrances. Once when the 33rd to Journal Square line failed, I had to hike to Hoboken and take the Hoboken PATH train to get home. I think there is an entrance immediately adjoining the tracks that had to be shut down, but since the PATH is well underground, it should not be affected - although with the PA and NJT, you never know.

He said it sounded like an explosion, but he didn't think there was one.

He also said the engineer, in the front car, is not controlling with a dead man switch, but with an "alerter" (described in another post in this thread). The diesel-electric traction engine is at the rear of the train.

It appears that the beautiful station itself was not directly affected. The train shed with the curved skylights was damaged.

I caught a little bit of that on FOX news, the big question I have is was the big explosion before it hit the concrete barrier or was the big explosion the result of the train hitting the concrete barrier.

He said the sound of the train hitting the barrier sounded like an explosion. He also said the train did not slow down and “went airborn” over the concrete barrier.
