Hurricane Matthew
NOAA/NHC ^ | 1 October 2016 | NOAA/NHC

Posted on 10/01/2016 7:00:34 AM PDT by NautiNurse

Hurricane Matthew is big, bad and just downright scary, and we await the long anticipated sharp turn northward. Jamaica is completing final storm preparations. All interests in the Eastern U.S. and Bahamas should be carefully watching the track of Mighty Matthew.

Ripped straight from the NHC Discussion page:

Matthew remains south of a low-to mid-level ridge over
the western Atlantic. The dynamical models forecast this ridge to
weaken over the next 72 hours as a mid- to upper-level trough develops
over the Gulf of Mexico. This evolution should cause Matthew to turn
northwestward after 24 hours and northward by 48-72 hours. The guidance
generally agrees with this scenario. However, there is a spread between
the GFS forecast of landfall in Jamaica and eastern Cuba and the ECMWF
forecast landfall in southwestern Haiti. The guidance becomes more
divergent after 72 hours.

Screw ‘em. Heard a clip today of Obama announcing that, at his personal direction, FEMA was dispatched to more states than I could count for this storm. It was clear he was using info that was at least two days old. Goober.

The media has everyone freaking there. They are throwing around the most dreaded name in So Florida..ANDREW.

That's about like comparing a looming tornado to the one that hit Jarrell, Texas. Very irresponsible, they're causing people to panic more than they already are.

Good grief. I feel so helpless at times like these. My brothers line is busy... but to be just a day beyond surgery... I have faith in the hospitals’ emergency plans and capabilities..but saying plenty of prayers as well. Started a new job with a company that manages dialysis centers..all of mine are in Florida. Praying for them and their patients. Pray for a strong west wind to get that storm away from the coast and into cooler waters..

How heavy is the tree cover at her place, and are there large hardwoods that could fall on the residence?

If she stays, make sure she stays put and doesn’t drive anywhere during the storm, there could be significant flash flooding and falling trees. Also make sure she has at least five gallons of bottled water and some canned/ready to eat food such as soup or spam or bread. Also good to fill up buckets and pots with water for flushing in case water pressure goes out due to lack of electricity to pump it up into water towers. A top-loading washing machine is great for such water storage as well - fill it and turn it off. Also, a gallon of unscented bleach and cloth for straining can be used to disinfect tap water.

The current models have a Cat 4 eye grinding right up the coast. Slowly. I don’t think they are over-hyping this, especially if Matthew ends up on the high side of the Cat 4 range.

LOL--I didn't know anybody actually reads the blurb at the top of the thread! Times are changing! As CD said, all of the other graphics and links are current for Hurricane Matthew. You probably won't get much use out of the Caribbean buoy now, but there are also links for Public Advisories, Bouy data for FL and SE US, and lots of goodies for data nerds.

p.s. I've been doing this for a lot of hurricanes, and for a long time.

Water for flushing toilets, etc. becomes pretty dear in a protracted power outage. Fill the bathtub and possibly even a few sinks for this purpose. Conserve the clean water for drinking, cooking and bathing. Gas grill is very handy, cold canned food gets old quick. Ice for refrigerated and frozen foods so they won’t spoil.

Hurricanes are the only negative attribute of living in South Florida. I can deal with the heat.

Noseeums aren't an issue for you?

I *LOVE* FL but at some times of the year, getting bit up by those nasty little bugs is more than I can handle.

Also have her invest in a couple of LED flashlights or laterns if they are not gone already - I am seeing reports of folks going bonkers in the Savannah area.

It’s very unnerving, sitting in a house or condo in a wooded area, listening to the wind howl and hearing trees snap. Even if one doesn’t hit the structure and damage it, it’s just about enough to drive you completely nuts. Especially at night. If she has a lot of trees, especially large hardwoods, that can fall on the residence, she really does need to consider other options, for her own sanity’s sake, lol.
