A Facebook Live video of the protest shows a pickup truck revving its engine in front of the crowd that had spilled onto the street in Reno's downtown. Several protesters confronted the driver and the passenger before the truck drives through the crowd, tires squealing, at about 6:40 p.m. Monday.
Soto said the activists did not have a permit to protest in the street, but some had gathered in the travel lanes of Virginia Street on the main casino drag.
Soto said he couldn't comment on whether the driver or passenger felt threatened by the crowd and declined to comment on whether it was being treated as a hate crime.
"We are certainly looking into all aspects of the information that comes forward," Soto told reporters.

If anybody dies simply execute the driver for murder and be done with him.
Suppose the mob was attacking the men in the truck. Still anxious to execute?

Hate crime by protesters against driver and passenger in car on Reno street. Not sure any details, I don’t watch/read any local news but local protesters should give thought to the fact that Nevada has CCW and lots of people here do carry.
The mob apparently was attacking the driver and his passenger.

If true that they were threatening the driver and passenger, I have no problem with him plowing through the attackers. You apparently do.

They did surround the truck and there were threats against the driver and passenger, “I’ll tear you out of that car you little f***.” It’s captured on video.
If a bunch of people surround my car and start beating on it I’m leaving. You would be well advised to get out of the way.
Doesn’t look good for the driver from your link. Saying stuff outside the vehicle doesn’t add up to run over them for fear of life.
watch the vid of the incident in post #3....they surround the truck, threaten “i’ll ef you up”, threaten “i’ll tear you out of the car you little f^q””...can be heard loud and clear and they surrounded the truck...
you’ve got to be joking...they are outnumbered 5-to-1, they are being threatened, they are surrounded and the protestors do nothing when the guys in the truck ask them to move...the video does not substantiate the claims made about comments coming from inside the truck..
I have a rule: Anyone says they are “going to tear you out of that car you little f###” and makes other threats, I believe their intent and respond accordingly.
Been there, done that. Example: In Fort Worth, some bangers pulled up next to me when I was riding a motorcycle. They said, “Nice bike.” I said, “Thanks.” One of them then said, “It’s about to be ours.” At that point, I showed them my .357 magnum. They left post haste.
So was I out of line, too?
If I was surrounded I’d probably do the same thing.

Additionally on the video I saw someone shoved a wooden pole or broom handle through the open driver’s side window and that is when the truck goes forward through the surrounding mob.
Maybe we need a law rather like the “Stand Your Ground” law for the highways. If you are on a highway you have a legal right to be on, someone who illegitimately attempts to impede your progress can be defined as a deadly threat.
Leave it up to jury to determine if you were reasonable about it or not. Dashcams or phone video would remove doubts.
People who attempt to stop your legitimate progress are coming very close to kidnapping.
