A town in Italy now has a wine fountain that lets people get free wine at all hours of the day

We think we’ve just found our happy place.

The town of Caldari di Ortona, Abruzzo, Italy, has always been a delightful destination. It’s a spot on a popular pilgrimage route, the Cammino di San Tommaso, and has glorious sights to be seen and vineyards to visit.

But recently, the town has introduced a feature that takes it from ‘ooh, I’d like to visit there, maybe’ to ‘TAKE ME THERE, NOW’.

If you visit Caldari di Ortona, you will find a fountain. But not just any fountain. We’re talking about a wine fountain, that dispenses free wine 24/7.

The fountain sits in the Dora Sarchese vineyard, and is open to everyone who walks by and fancies grabbing a glass.

It’s a joint project of the vineyard and a non-profit organisation that protects the pilgrimage route. So it’s specifically designed to quench the thirst of all the people taking hikes along the pathway.

It’s not good to over-aerate your wine.

“Well, alcohol does not quench the thirst, but what the heck.”

But it can make you not care about being thirsty.

I’m reminded of the famous quote by Robert Heinlein:

Italian’s start drinking wine at 10. A small glass with dinner.

There are very few abusers because they treat it as a drink to be enjoyed and savored, not guzzled.

That’s where i depart from my ancestors :)
