We think weve just found our happy place.
The town of Caldari di Ortona, Abruzzo, Italy, has always been a delightful destination. Its a spot on a popular pilgrimage route, the Cammino di San Tommaso, and has glorious sights to be seen and vineyards to visit.
But recently, the town has introduced a feature that takes it from ooh, Id like to visit there, maybe to TAKE ME THERE, NOW.
If you visit Caldari di Ortona, you will find a fountain. But not just any fountain. Were talking about a wine fountain, that dispenses free wine 24/7.
The fountain sits in the Dora Sarchese vineyard, and is open to everyone who walks by and fancies grabbing a glass.
Its a joint project of the vineyard and a non-profit organisation that protects the pilgrimage route. So its specifically designed to quench the thirst of all the people taking hikes along the pathway.

Try saying that after your free wine!
Muslims are gonna shut that down
Ortona is close enough.
Beside the free vino, Ortona is also known as the site of an epic WWII battle.
From Wikipedia....
“Ortona was the site of fierce fighting between the 1st Fallschirmjäger Division and the 1st Canadian Infantry Division during the Italian campaign in World War II. The ferocity of the Battle of Ortona led it to be known as the “Little Stalingrad”.”
I was born not too far from there - near L’Aquila.
What about you?
Pop was born in naples but came here very young.
Mom’s parents came from Trapani.
I was born in Brooklyn :)
Wow, you REALLY are an Italian! :)
The real thing... an Abruzzese!
“I was born in Brooklyn :)”
Reminds me of the song...
“Io so ‘n’americano
Sono nato a Brookulino
Ma mamma mia e du mare chiaro (Naples).”
I was trying to find it on youtube, but I don’t know the title...
Hmmm...Not sure if I’d want a glass of wine from a fountain. Is it red wine or white - just as long as it isn’t yellow. :-)
That’s funny :)
I still want to know if “Dominick the Italian Christmas Donkey (played every Christmas Eve) is an Americano song or is from Italy :)
My Grandfather gave us red wine with coke we were around 6 or 7 years old.
The government now wants the public to drink excessively to forget and not pay attention to the mass savages that are invading their country, nice!
That’s VERY old world! :)
They've even got a webcam going.
“Is it red wine or white”
Both, there’s no way the Italians would just provide one type. (check out the picture)
I guess the alcohol will sterilize the pigeon poop.
That makes more sense than what the US did with overproduction of tens of millions of gallons of milk this past year.
We dumped it to “help support prices.”
What sort of world is it where we dump perfectly useful milk to maintain prices? That is a market gone wrong.
It makes the torching of new car lots or the explosion of atom bombs over populated areas sound “responsible.”
I’m not talking about that. I’m talking about the “free” part.
