Utah Navajos join lawmakers to oppose Bears Ears

Navajo Nation locals joined Utah lawmakers Sept. 21 to express opposition to any attempt to designate land around the Bears Ears site in southeastern Utah as a national monument.

The Navajo residents of San Juan County, Utah, joined their elected officials who said the decision on the 1.9-million acre site, which is sacred to the Navajo people, should be left in local hands.

“We have managed to protect this enchanted place, and we will continue to do so,” Susie Philemon said.

...

Lewis Singer, a Navajo from San Juan County, said monument status would restrict access of Native people to gather firewood and hunt game critical for their survival. He prefers another option.

“I think that there is still concern with PLI (the Public Lands Initiative), but that would be probably a better solution than going with the designation,” he said. “We could probably work things out if those issues that were a concern were remedied.”

Bill Clinton closed high quality, clean , low sulfur coal mining nearby so that his pals , the Riady family, got a windfall from their holdings in Asia. In trade for cash to the Clinton Foundation. Killed good paying, rural, local jobs in Utah.

Similar here. Some mining. Farmers and communities also need water to survive. Like Tombstone, Az. ; cut off the water, then they die.

Plus other issues.

There was a Bundy, part 2, protest ride against the federal government land grabbers.

Not as widely reported as the Bundy ranch in Nevada or Oregon ( part 3 ).

The article in the link paints Obama and Holder as hero’s.
But their motives were to glean block voting from the Indian Nations, and paint themselves as white knights to crunchy liberals. And it cost the administration nothing. ‘The people’ paid the judgement.

I remember a Native American bumper sticker: “Think you can trust the government to keep its word? Ask an Indian”.
