Throw in crony capitalism and phony concern about low income renters and you have a nice socialist gift to lefty fatcats in NYC. Does Trump still have hotels in NYC? If so, he'll profit mightily. Why don't they say that?

I can actually see this issue from both sides. It's true that Airbnb is filling a need in the market, but it's also true that it circumvents a lot of perfectly legitimate laws and regulations that apply to the hospitality industry.
It's also worth noting that the housing market in New York City is dominated by rental units and condos/cooperatives, and I suspect Airbnb is probably not permitted to operate in most buildings under the terms of the lease agreements and rules of these building owners/managers.
