The smoke that ship produces is insane, and indicative of really poor combustion. I served on a steam powered carrier that was the oldest combatant in the Navy. It never belched smoke like that.

I was a BT on a Fram tin can. If we made smoke like that under way, the Captain would have had a big piece of Cheng’s ass. Then Cheng would have a big piece of the Chief BTs ass and then the Chief would have a big piece of the fire room sups ass.
Because we didn’t have light off blowers we had to pressurize the fire room for light off. In port, we always lit off about 2 am so the Squad dog and the EPA did not see us making smoke.

Old Great Lakes steamers running on Number 6 oil don’t make black smoke like the Rooski does...

I think that ship is burning coal for it’s power plant.

Noticed that too. Probably really poor-quality fuel, too.

I’ve watched videos in the past of the Kuznetsov under power and it did not smoke. Wonder if this extreme smoking is the result of recent maneuvers off Scotland? Developed some sort of mechanical issue? Would have thought it would return to Severomorsk for repairs?

Was that the USS Kitty Hawk, known to its crew as the “USS S***ty Kitty”?

Never been on one, but the many smells of a coal fired carrier are unforgettable to those who sailed on her. To the point of affecting the taste of one’s food.

Anyway, Kuznetsov is indeed an aging Soviet rustbucket. Why didn’t they launch some aircraft while in the Channel, just to prove otherwise?
