In 49 states, when you order breakfast in a restaurant you might be asked if you would like pancakes or an omelet. In Wisconsin, you are asked if you would like pancakes with your omelet. Ron Johnson would, thank you. This Republican U.S. senator, who is burning prodigious amounts of calories campaigning for a second and final term, really does represent the hearty eaters who were fueling up at a Perkins Restaurant here on a recent Sunday morning.
In 2010, Johnson left his plastics manufacturing company that made him wealthy enough to try, against his preference for the private sector and against his wife’s adamant disapproval, to become the only manufacturer in the Senate. He surfed into that chamber on the Republican wave raised by two things that annoyed Johnson enough to propel him into politics — the Obama administration’s stimulus that did not stimulate and Obamacare, which six years later is in intensive care.
Johnson defeated a three-term incumbent, Russ Feingold, who this year is again Johnson’s opponent. Being devoted environmentalists, Democrats believe in recycling even their candidates: In Indiana, too, a former senator, Evan Bayh, is in a tight race trying to return to Washington.

Ron Johnson is pulling even with Russ Feingold in the polls. If he were reelected, it would be a kick in the teeth for Harry Reid and his minions.

Good luck getting REAL butter anywhere but a grocery. Every restaurant just offers margarine, or as I call it, axle grease. Butter has two ingredients—milk, salt, as it says on the carton. Margarine has a paragraph of unspeakable words naming the concoctants. Ew...pass. I’m considering putting a small container of butter in my bugout bag that goes everywhere with me when I’m going out for chow. Guess it’s having it your way, as the old BK commercial went.
I understand there is an independent candidate labeling himself as a Trump Conservative. But, I think Wisconsinites should go ahead and vote for the Democrat, instead of splitting the votes against Ryan.
The GOP can handle the loss of a single House seat, if that's what it takes to send Ryan packing.
Johnson has been weak since elected. Now that he is up for re-election, he finally grew a spine. He rode to Washington on the Tea Party coattails....and like most, flipped the minute he got there. He has been on the wrong side of almost every issue. HB’2s, omnibus, etc. That said, Feingold is 10 times worse.
Not very many lawn signs for either candidate. Not sure how this one will play out.

From 1925-1967 margarine was banned from sale in the state of Wisconsin. I guess Wisconsinites even tried smuggling it in, or making what they called “oleo runs” from Illinois. Thousands of Wisconsinites became fake-butter law breaking felons.

No joke. Wisconsin statute 98.17 has been in place since 1895 and it still stands today. It’s still illegal for restaurants to serve margarine – unless the customer specifically orders it. The “yellow stick from Satan himself,” as Governor Warren Knowles called it – is also a big no no in prisons, hospitals, schools or other state institutions – unless absolutely necessary for health reasons.
My Uncle was a dairy farmer, and I first had butter there when I was about 10. I never ate margarine again, and I had to buy my own butter out of my paper route profits. Mother grew up on a farm during the depression and wouldn’t have it, she ate that horrendous ‘Weight Watchers’ garbage, never mind she was 5’ 7” and never went over 125#. No wonder she died at 66.

I tried watching it again. It’s too depressing...
This is news to me.
My father was from a poor, Depression family; he did some varmint hunting occasionally as a boy. They could not afford butter.
He once told me how they would take a brick of margarine and play catch with: that broke up the dye inside and blended it to make the margarine yellow instead of white.
I now wonder how and where they got the bricks.
