Paul Ryan just finished his first year as speaker. He may not see a second

House Speaker Paul D. Ryan is on the verge of a reckoning with House conservatives that threatens to end his speakership and extinguish his own future as a national political leader.

The intraparty fight is set to begin in the days after the Nov. 8 election, when Ryan (R-Wis.) will be under immediate pressure from approximately 40 hard-line House conservatives frustrated with his handling of spending fights and shifting position on GOP presidential nominee Donald J. Trump. The conservatives are eyeing a November leadership election and December spending deadline to determine how Ryan can lead Republicans — or if he can lead them at all.

Conservatives have no plans to compromise next year with Hillary Clinton, if she wins the White House, and Democrats capture the Senate. They are pushing Ryan to hold the line on spending and other matters, even if it means continued partisan gridlock on Capitol Hill. Some members of the hard-right House Freedom Caucus have crafted a list of demands — including deep spending cuts, changes to House rules and a promise to vote only on bills that have majority Republican support — in exchange for their support.

While your thought has some validity, the fact is given the array of congressmen, Ryan was the choice of the majority. The people elect a very diverse Republican congress and that congress expressed the will of the people as Paul Ryan.

I disagree with your analysis. The people elected a Republican congress in 2014 to give them the power they needed to fight Obama's agenda. Yet they buckled and gave Obama everything he wanted.

I was so disgusted with that unspeakable betrayal that I quit the party and formally changed my registration from Republican to "unenrolled."

I wish he would have lost his primary to Nehlan

It took him just DAYS to go back on his word after winning the primary.

But, if he stays in office he must lose the speakershp. How can he be incharge if Trump wins and he was against him.

Sometimes takes a while to get a big enough black bag together.

Based on recently released documents, Ryan should be awaiting trial right now on public corruption charges.

RINOs like Ryan are petrified Trump will win because if he starts parading Demorats to jail, some of the RINOs will not be far behind.

Couldn't happen to a nicer guy. Let's add Linda Graham from South Carolina and John McCain to the list and we'd have a good start.

We won't need term limits for a while because many of the old fossils will be heading for jail.

I submit that the will of We The People is almost never represented anymore by those elected to do so.

That - and that alone - accounts for the ascendancy of Donald Trump.
