The First College Football Playoff Ranking Is Out And There Is One Small Surprise

The first College Football Playoff ranking is out and the Alabama Crimson Tide are No. 1.

Alabama is followed by Clemson, Michigan, and Texas A&M. The first teams on the outside, looking in, are Washington (No. 5) and Ohio State (No. 6).

The biggest surprise is Texas A&M being ranked fourth, ahead of Washington. The Aggies are ranked seventh in the Associated Press poll after having lost 33-14 to Alabama. Washington is 8-0 and is the only undefeated Power-5 conference team that is not among the top four.

Interestingly, this ranking includes two teams from the SEC's West division, Alabama and Texas A&M, and only one of those teams can play in the SEC championship game. The playoff committee has shown in the past that they put a lot of weight on winning conference championships.

This suggests that the current ranking says more about where the committee thinks the teams are now as opposed to where the committee believes the teams will end up. In other words, don't expect both Alabama and Texas A&M to be in the playoff even if both win all of their remaining games and Washington probably still controls their own destiny.

Remember that the ratings were done by the news media. And we all know how they do things.

The P5 conferences have such brutal schedules, the best teams are lucky to survive with less than 2 losses.

Right, like A&M has ever received any benefit from any east coast (or other, for that matter) bias.

If Wash wins out, they’re in. Today’s rankings don’t matter. A&M needs Wash or someone ahead of them to lose.

>>If the top 5 SEC teams played the top 5 PAC12 teams, the SEC would be lucky to win 1 game.

Hillary supporter??

I’m not sure Coach O and the swamp kitties have been tested in the last three games. The WarTigerEagles are another story. They seem to have found their stride. I hope y’all beat them both so we get another chance at y’all

Thanks and Gig’em

I’m an Aggie, so I have interests different from you, but if y’all go 13-0 I expect that we will be on the outside looking in. A P5 undefeated conference champ (except the Big 12-2-2+2... those guys don’t deserve a place) has earned a spot in the playoff and I am good with that

I was thinking we could expand this to 4 teams and have a 5 vs. 4 playin game in mid December maybe before Christmas and then have that winner play the number 1 team.
