President Obama on Thursday will welcome Donald Trump to the White House, beginning a transition of power that is pure anguish for many in the Democratic Party.
The meeting, which seemed improbable just 72 hours ago, will likely stand as one of the most humbling moments of Obamas presidency.
Trump rose to political stardom in Obamas first term by questioning his birthplace, spurring Obama to label him a carnival barker. The feud carried over into this years campaign, where Obama repeatedly described Trump as unfit for the Oval Office.
But despite his efforts, and vigorous campaigning by first lady Michelle Obama, Trump vanquished Hillary Clinton with victories in swing states that Obama had carried in 2008 and 2012.
Now Obama must begin to hand the keys to the White House to a leader who has pledged to unravel much of his legacy, from ObamaCare to environmental protections to Wall Street reform and the Iran nuclear deal.
Im not saying its going to be an easy meeting, White House press secretary Josh Earnest said.
Dark clouds hung over the White House the day before Trumps visit, mirroring the mood inside the executive mansion.
But the sky cleared before Obama entered the Rose Garden Wednesday afternoon to put a positive spin on the results.
The president recalled a video he recorded on election night, in which he reminded the country that the sun would come up in the morning no matter who won.
The sun is up. And I know everybody had a long night. I did as well.
But the day after, we have to remember that were actually all on one team.
While Obama emphasized the importance of a smooth transition and a unified American government, there was no mistaking the pain felt by those on hand.

No two-term president did more than Obama to ensure the election of his preferred successor in Clinton. But her colossal failure on Election Day could result in much of his legacy being wiped away.
It was, quite literally, the Obama presidency that gave us Trump.
“Hi, Barrack, pleased to meet you. Yeah, you’re a swell guy. We just disagree with all your positions....”
I don’t know if I would use the word, “welcome” . . . I don’t see 0bama being gracious to an old white man that is a real threat to his so-called ‘legacy’.
But there is a real old white man that appreciates Barry more than words can say, and that would be Jimmy Earl Carter.
I wonder if the Bam gonna stand there with his Mussolini head tilt and pontificate like he’s some sort of icon to be revered and adored.
I am LMAO at the idea that the WH resident is humble about anything! He only bows to sheiks and musloids.
Dark days? Pfft...he’s been in the dark for 8 years. So nothing new here.
Dark days for Obama? That is the focus?
A brighter future for AMERICA
“dark days”...I see what you did there!
Obama knows the Trump DOJ will have the goods on him. He hopes little boot-licking will keep him out of jail.
...Im not saying its going to be an easy meeting...
It will be a walk in the park for Trump.
He has his Executive Order cancellation pen engraved and ready.
When Trump meets wit Obama he should smile, say thank you, commit himself to nothing and then leave and go about planning to dismantle everything Obama. No need to tip his hand to the boy king.
Trump , “I hope you’ll take all those Prayer Rugs with you”
Fabulous picture, hadn’t seen it.
ValJar looks particularly upset.....this made my day!
Obama cast Clinton as a guardian of his accomplishments, warning voters in stark terms that a Trump presidency would reverse every single thing that weve done.
THANK GOD!!!
