Trump letting Hillary off the hook is his biggest mistake yet
NY Post ^ | 11-22-16 | Michael Goodwin

At first blush, Donald Trump’s decision to swear off criminal investigations of Hillary Clinton didn’t look like a good idea.

At second blush, it looks like a terrible idea.

The decision, dribbled out in a TV report and then confirmed by aide Kellyanne Conway, is too momentous to come in bits and pieces and from anyone other than Trump directly. He made the pledge at a debate to appoint a special prosecutor, and it smacks of Washington-as-usual for the reversal to slither out the back door.

Yet instead of the president-elect personally explaining his big decision, the public got snippets of comments he made during an interview with the New York Times.

“I don’t want to hurt the Clintons, I really don’t,” the paper quoted him as saying. “She went through a lot and suffered greatly in many different ways.”

Asked whether he had ruled out a prosecution, he reportedly said, “It’s just not something that I feel very strongly about.”

Trump is trying to lull Obama into not giving her a pardon.

Or is he trying to "lull" *us* into complacency?

I think some of us have to be cautious about giving Trump too much rope and benefit of doubt on this issue as well as a few other recent "evolved" issues.

The guy ran on explicit issues and promises. IS he reneging on prosecuting (the FBI/DoJ responsibility) Hitlery's warehouse of treason and criminality? On Global Warming? On "enhanced interrogation"?

I'm getting a baaaad feeling about the guy about now. Why can't he just...SHUT HIS BIG YAPPER??!?

There was an investigation, Buttercups! What? You do not like the results?

You want to have PE Trump to interfere in the investigations that have taken place? What of the rule of law? Wasn’t there an FBI investigation into the server issue? The DOJ was involved. No grand jury was called. A decision made. This was the determination of a DOJ formed by a legitimately elected President. Elections have consequences, you know. Perhaps you should not elect leftist fascists for President.

Now, you want your PE Trump to be as evil and partisan as Obama?

There is still the Clinton Foundation investigation. Justice may yet be served.

Stop being fair weather friends & sunshine patriots! Trump will take an oath on 1/20/2017 to uphold the Constitution. The rule of law will be re-established. The law will prevail. The office of the President has no prosecutorial powers!!!!!!

Don’t be fools and ask Trump for verbal rhetoric which is meaningless other than to make you feel better.

I think it would be wise for Trump to say nothing.

I may be wrong, but I think he said he would not seek investigation on the e-mail server.

He may be “playing chess” again.

Plus, he knows better than to engage in too many battles at the same time.

He’s not even sworn in yet, and has LOTS and LOTS to do, most of which will include merciless attacks from the left, and the media. A good executive knows how to prioritize his work, taking care of the “A” list first.

There’s a lot more he needs to do to undo the Obama catastrophe, and now that Hillary has lost, she’s dropped to his “D” list of priorities.

There are plenty others with an eye on her.

Here is a theory that is rolling around in my mind. Just hear me out. What if Trump believes that if he talks about going hard against Hillary, it will encourage Obama to pardon her. Now, if he says he really isn't interested in going after her, Obama may think that there is no pressing need to pardon her. He doesn't like her all that much to begin with, and he would no doubt takes some heat for giving her a blanket pardon. If he felt that he didn't have to do it, he may just let it slide. Hillary, would then be in legal limbo for a couple of months. Not trusting either Obama or Trump, she would practically be BEGGING Obama to pardon her. This act of groveling would no doubt leak out, showing clearly Hillary is fully cognizant of her own guilt.

Anyway, Trump is trying to not force Obama's hand, which frees up his options against Hillary when he becomes president. At some point, a Trump Justice Department would find 'new' evidence, and pursue a case against her, without the barrier caused by an Obama pardon.

Right! We will know Trump’s intention if he replaces Comey. A new FBI director likely would recommend prosecution and AG Sessions would follow through.

For what it’s worth, I think the best outcome at this point would be for the Clintons and the Obamas to exile themselves to some Third World hellhole that has no extradition treaty with the U.S.

This would be, in effect, an admission of guilt.

Satisfying as it would be to inflict condign punishment upon the leaders of the Left, the fact remains that we’ve got a hell of a tough job ahead getting the economy on track and the military back to normal efficiency.

Investigating and trying Hitlery would be the mother of all distractions.

The Left is so vile and dangerous that the only way to truly beat them is through violence — disperse the rioters with real bullets, then try their leaders for treason and execute them. But the only way this could happen is through a right-wing dictatorship, which is not what we just elected.

I would say candidly that I believe the only way we can save what’s left of our culture is through such a dictatorship, followed by a gradual restoration of the Constitution once the cancer has been cut out.

However, politics being the art of the possible, our best practical weapon against the Left is to starve it of funding.

Unlike the usual concern trolls here, I will reserve judgment until events have played out.

I know how the news outlets are reporting on it now, but here is a live tweet from within the meeting as it happened:

Trump says "no" when asked if he is taking investigations off the table for Clintons but adds he doesn't want to "hurt the Clintons."

Which just goes to show how the press is still manipulating the conversation by selective omission of facts.

Very misleading headline. Trump said that prosecution was NOT off the table. What he did say was that HE wasn’t going to pursue prosecution.

Wish the hand wringers would figure this out.

It's possible this is his strategy. Avoid the appearance of a personal vendetta by letting others do the dirty work.

Not too dissimilar to how he let his campaign surrogates do most of the worst mud slinging in the campaign, while not touching a lot of it himself.

I don't know this to be a fact, but it's a possibility.

Trump says that she has been through enough?

Whenever little people commit crimes, their lives are destroyed, they are incarcerated, their families are devastated.

That's what should happen to the elites also.
The totality of the recklessness, enrichment, corruption, etc., that she is accused of certainly outweighs a habitual bank robber or tax evasion rap.

I agree. The headline is misleading. Ann Coulter has stated why Hillary is not off the hook.

And I am getting a bad feeling about the crybaby conservatives already whining about a POTUS not even in office. This divisive nonsense is not how you win battles.

You need to accept the fact we aren’t going to get everything. Did Dems the get everything they wanted from the kenyan? Of course not. President Trump can only fight so many political nuclear wars at once and you need to accept that fact.
