Washington Democrats ponder path forward after disappointing election
Seattle Times ^ | November 26, 2016 | Seattle Times staff reporter

The Washington Democratic Party is doing some soul searching, after an election that went far better for them than their national counterparts but was still disappointing to some party members.

As the national Democratic Party considers its path forward in the wake of a disastrous election, the Washington Democratic Party is doing the same, following an election that was far better than the national party’s, but not a smashing success either.

Nationally, Democrats will be out of power in the House, the Senate and the presidency for the first time since 2006.

In Washington, one of the country’s bluer states, Democrats held the governor’s office, U.S. Senate seat and most other statewide offices and supported successful ballot initiatives to raise the minimum wage and make it easier to bar potentially dangerous people from getting guns.

But they didn’t take back control of the state Senate, as they’d hoped to do, and didn’t build on their razor-thin majority in the state House.

In county races, Democrats lost seats in Western Washington counties they would be expected to control — Pierce, Thurston and Grays Harbor. And they remain all-but-shutout east of the Cascade Mountains.

Perhaps party members should take a short walk over a very high cliff.

But they didn’t take back control of the state Senate

Didja ever notice that the Democrats are always described as "taking back", while the Republicans are always described "taking over", as if being Democrat is the standard status?

Exactly. They don't need to take a path forward. They need to go hard left, as hard as they can go. Be loud and be proud. Let the people know who you really are. You'll win landslides in every election.

Come on Democrats. Just do it. You know you want to.

Dem’s haven’t had a “path forward” since JFK.

They’re all about regression to a fascist standard.

“Forward” is more freedom and they’ve only ever wanted freedom from God.

Uh, it wasn't "disappointing news," it was "news of losses of titanic proportions!"

There's no way to bs your way around it, Leftists!

Keep going in the same direction and paying your own lyin' advisors and pollsters and you're going the way of the Dodo bird, except you will still have your acolyte useful idiots staffing education establishments from pre-school through graduate schools, still spewing out the same lies of the last 40 years or more, to train up more little Chairman Maos to "protest Amerika!"

It goes back a lot further than 1990.

More like 1900 (at least).

The rise of the Washington State Communist Party is part of the story of American Communism. In 1919 the Socialist Party of America split apart and gave birth to not one but two communist parties. Inspired by the Bolshevik revolution and determined to affiliate with the new international Communist movement, one group of leftwing Socialists bolted and established the Communist Party of America (CPA), while another group of Reds tried to take over the Socialist Party, only to fail and be expelled. In September 1919 they established the Communist Labor Party (CLP). The new parties remained separate for almost two years. CPA, led by Charles E. Ruthenberg, was largely comprised of what had been the foreign-language sections of the old Socialist Party. The rival Communist Labor Party, led by John Reed and Benjamin Gitlow, attracted English-speaking radicals. Under pressure from the Communist International (Comintern), the parties merged in 1921, becoming the Communist Party USA (CPUSA), with Ruthenberg as leader.

The Pacific Northwest seemed like fertile ground for the new movement. The region had long been recognized as a center of labor radicalism. The Socialist Party of Washington (SPW) had formed in 1901, and by 1912 was strong enough to elect city officials in a number of cities, including Seattle. The Industrial Workers of the World (IWW) also flourished in the cities and timber camps of the region and succeeded in pushing the rest of the labor movement and many Socialists to the left. Most of those who joined the SPW after 1912 allied with the "Red" (revolutionary) faction. That was especially the case among the Finns and other immigrant groups who maintained their own Socialist locals. Events of 1919 further demonstrated the region's radical potential. In February of that year the city of Seattle was shut down by a general strike that began in the shipyards and soon involved 60,000 workers. As the year progressed, other dramatic strikes spread across the country (e.g., Boston police strike, massive coal and steel industry strikes), creating a revolutionary romantic atmosphere that seemed to bode well for the new movement.
