Trump threatens ‘consequences’ for U.S. firms that relocate offshore
Washington Post ^ | December 1, 2016 | Ylan Q. Mui, Matea Gold, and Max Ehrenfreund

President-elect Donald Trump on Thursday warned that the government would punish companies seeking to move operations overseas with “consequences,” setting the stage for an unusual level of intervention by the White House into private enterprise. Trump’s remarks came as he triumphantly celebrated a decision by the heating and air-conditioning company Carrier to reverse its plans to close a furnace plant here and move to Mexico, helping keep 1,100 jobs in Indianapolis. About 800 of those were manufacturing positions that had been scheduled to move south of the border, said a person familiar with the negotiations.

THIS is why I have supported Trump since the beginning.

For the entire last generation, everyone in both political parties has been sold out to a small group of people, who are busy selling companies to China.

They keep 49 percent of the company, which is now Chinese, in all but name. The jobs, the manufacturing know-how, and 51 percent of the profits go to China.

BOTH PARTIES have been sold out, for years, and years. And years. Everyone. Everywhere.

Trump stood up prior to this election, and made it clear he was opposed to the sell-out.

Mr. President-elect, THIS is why I voted for you.

I quit my job about one year ago. Left voluntarily, but the company was busy sending every job they could south of the border.

We used to have an enormous presence in the United States. Not now. Now it is becoming all about Central and South America.

I worked there for 20 years. But I left. So many Americans have similar stories.

Everyone is sold out.

Except it seems, for you. We are counting on you, to change things.

For real.

Go Trump. President Trump.

Make us proud, once again.

Consequences is more than I am willing to support but, if he wants offer incentives, that’s different and I will support that.

Agreed. Make it difficult for companies to leave, and they won’t come in the first place.

A lot of it is in US citizens. I'm considered a bit odd for buying "made in the USA" whenever possible. I complain whenever a company outsources. If all Trump supporters did this, that's what will make a difference.

Look at the prices on most merchandise. It isn't cheaper than it would be. The savings to a great degree goes to transportation costs, executive compensation, celebrity branding and excess profit. American Giant is an example of a US manufacturer who's high quality and successful. It's up to US to demand jobs come home. We do that with what we purchase!

The threat of consequence is likely as far as it will go, that and incentives to stay should keep what remains. Not to say Trump is bluffing, he isn’t. And who would want to find out? Carrot and stick.

This is wrong. Reagan set the example- reduce taxes and regulations and business will grow, employment will rise. Threats aren’t the way to go. Threatening some sort of retaliation will be counterproductive in the end. This should make people uneasy. It does me.

“unusual level of intervention by the White House into private enterprise.”

Really? Like stopping offshore drilling? Stonewalling on pipelines? Strangling coal-based electricity generation? Prosecution of entrepreneurs for not wanting to violate their religion? No, no unusual level of intervention into private enterprise by the WH there. Screw you, WaPo.

Exactly right. I objected to "consequences" with the current Narcissist in Chief sitting in the White House and I object to the usage of "consequences" with President Elect Trump (who I voted for.)

I would much rather President Elect Trump address WHY companies are moving off-shore (regulations run amok, confiscatory tax rates, etc..) than threaten companies who are looking to leave.

Again, I voted for President Elect Trump to FIX these problems, not threaten companies. I'm confident he can drive consensus to fix these issues and that's a reason I voted for him!

When Obama does it it’s not, “an unusual level of intervention by the White House into private enterprise.” Bailouts, tax halts, IRS targeting... Trump should mail every media organization an American history book so they can keep up.

I agree. If you have to threaten "consequences" for companies that move their operations outside the U.S., then the U.S. really has a fouled-up economic environment for perfectly good, profitable companies to do business.

Money goes wherever it feels welcome, folks.

No country can survive economically without heavy industry. Over the years we’ve seen heavy industry leave our Shores and go offshore allowing those countries to take on our heavy industry and prosper.
Argentina around 1900 had a standard of living which riveled the U.S. if not exceeding the U.S. standard of living. Then heavy industry started trickling out of Argentina and Argentina was only restored when an oncoming Administration realized but no country can survive economically without heavy industry and heavy industry was once again instituted within the borders of Argentina allowing it to rise again as an economic and viable country.
If you look at EPA rules in our current state of a gross lack of heavy industry to sustain our economy, you will notice that regulation in most cases has driven heavy industry to other countries with much less regulation. And that is the root cause of the problem.

Reagan imposed tariffs against Japan.

He was for ‘peace through strength.’ Well, if you say “oh no, we can’t have tariffs” ...that’s the weakness that allows every other country to come up with all kinds of trade barriers and games and they have rolled over us because they know we won’t do anything about it.

Same deal with NATO. Almost every country isn’t paying their share of the funding because they know they can get away with it.

“This should make people uneasy. It does me.”

Folks will have to suck it up buttercup. I support 100% the idea if American companies move out of the USA, costing their employees & the country there should be consequences.

I would like to know the reasons why these companies are moving offshore.

If it is because of regulations and taxes, then those issues must be addressed.

Trump needs to find out what makes US manufactured goods uncompetitive and remove them.
