How badly did we beat these people in WW2 that they’ve become so astonishingly pusillanimous?
It sounds like a culture that’s easily hijacked. Stockholm syndrome prone.
For the sake of the Germans themselves, it probably would be smart for the USA to offer to help them. At this point, the migrants could be migrated to some other place, and it would even take a load off of Merkel. Germany can be as generous as it wishes to this settlement... far away from them.
We realized too late that Germany was a bulwark protecting Western Civilization. We demilitarized, divided, and punished them, destroyed their nationalism, and turned them into another Sweden. Instead of deservedly punishing Nazi criminals, we destroyed the strongest country in Europe, and now we can’t figure out why they act like sheep.
I guess when we took away their guns and bombs, we took away their balls as well. But how were we to know this would be the outcome??
The ‘Re-Education’ forced on the vanquished Germans by the Allies (especially the US govt.) after WW2 had exactly this in mind: first get militarism and nationalism out of the German mentality plus implant a massive guilt complex.
While that sounds in the context of Nazism as reasonable, the re-education was continued in the 1960’s by Marxists who added their ideological twist: get any traditional manly values, discipline and patriotic feelings out of the German collective mind. The WW2 guilt complex is still the perfect vehicle for this.
The result is a self-hating and self-depreciating German ‘mainstream’ Sure many are not going with this flow down the left... but for various reasons they still can’t defend themselves against this trend like other societies do.
