I have a friend who is in the Peace Corps and serving in Micronesia (Federai) . Is he in the affected area? Sorry... on my break at work and don’t have time to figure this out.

Living in Humboldt County means that your friends and family from all over the world regularly check in on you to see if you've survived the gigantic earthquake you hardly or never felt, and to warn you about the tsunami surely heading your way.

All tall trees can do is lean on each other. Probably a very safe place to be.

Just south of Eureka is a small closed/mostly-decommissioned nuclear power plant at Humboldt Bay.
Although the Reactor Building was built on and below grade (maybe a few feet above sea level at most), the more recently-constructed dry spent fuel storage facility was built on an artificial berm maybe ~ 12 feet above grade.
“Amazing” that the plant survived since the 60’s without being washed away by Tsunami. Or not.

“Have to wonder how the giant redwoods react to such a violent shaking”
they fall down.
i saw the immediate aftermath of a major earthquake 20 years ago in that area in the Humboldt Redwoods State Park, which contains the largest stand of virgin coastal redwoods on earth.
their root balls extend just a few feet down and a few feet beyond the trunk, very similar to the root balls of Palmettos and other members of the palm family. practically the only thing that saves them is that they grow best in these deep, narrow stream valleys that have steep walls, and when the big temblors strike, they sort of prop each other up, with many leaning against others rather than falling all the way down.

When Cascadia cuts loose again like it did around 1700, and it will, it will be BY FAR the Nation’s worst natural disaster.
