The drug smuggling biz tends to do that. It did it to Mexico; it’s doing that to the USA.

Is it time for a drug glasnost in the USA?

This isn’t the same as telling people it’s fine to be addicted. The zeitgeist under Trump is headed the other way, if anything.

But, letting this stuff go on in the sunshine, now would get us utter honesty about it. And also makes it possible to target meaningful intervention. All the hush-hush that had been going on about AIDS (doubtless to keep from yacking all over the place about the downsides of the activities of homosexuals) apparently backfired. Kept in the dark, it grew like mushrooms, for which that is their native habitat.

I think that if it were outed, rather than chased in cloak-and-dagger operations, street drug trafficking would actually get largely shamed out of existence. What still took place underground would take place due to shame, rather than to government coercion.

I know not everybody is where I am about this, and there’s the question of, say, Colorado. Colorado is a semi-shadow operation now. The official trade is in government sanctioned shops. But they are still heavily regulated. It isn’t easy enough to go that way, that the clandestine activities have disappeared in preference to it.

A stunning case of corruption inside the Department of Homeland Security was overshadowed by headlines about Russia and Israel this past week.

Imagine that, no wonder The Enemedia, Barky, McInsane, Linda Ghramnesty Crooked Hillary and the Rats are squealing "The Russians Are Coming".

It looks like they are smearing the agents when it’s contract employees who are taking the bribes.

This is the real scandal of Washington DC, the amount spent on contract employees to do the job that feds should do, but without the ethical and legal obligations of a federal employee.

It started under Clinton with Al Gore's Reinventing Government. Cheney and the Neocons screamed yeah-hah! when DHS was created and when we invaded Iraq. And the high-rise office complexes around the D.C. beltway keep going up and old houses in McClean are torn down to build mansions paid for by YOU, YOU SUCKERS, ALL OF YOU.

No wonder our immigration system is so broken.

The author has it backwards. I believe that these employees observed government policies which resulted in porous borders. These policies essentially broke the law. They then concluded that they might as well make some money on the situation. Why should they care, if the administration doesn't.

Exactly...I was amazed this got so little attention and even checked to see if the NYT article linked in this piece had been posted here, it hasn’t.

The entire Homeland Security charade is just another usurpation of power by an already bloated and corrupt Leviathan. Everyone of these federal agencies works against the people’s interest and the concept of federalism. The decent people who work at these agencies in good faith are poor fools who just enable the takers.

last 10 years almost 200 employees

There are over 60,000 employees at DHS this works out to only 20 employees a year. Still to much but hardly a crisis. Someone smarter than me do the math, 20 out of 60,000 a year isn't much of a percentage.

This is just the NYTs trashing out border security professionals as they have with the rest of our cops.

I live near the border there are too many law enforcement living above what should be their means.

Start taking names and lists of ownership before they disappear from the public record.

“I live near the border there are too many law enforcement living above what should be their means.”

And how would you know that?

There could be another wage earner, family money or an inheritance, for example.

.

Hundreds of DHS employees have "looked the other way" as drugs crossed the border because cartels have made them offers they can't refuse.

Quite a few government workers took bribes from rumrunners during Prohibition too. Bans on consensual vices inherently contain the seeds of their own failure.
