Yet Another VA Secretary Candidate Bows Out, Trump Struggles To Fill Position
The Daily Caller (Squalling) ^ | January 2, 2017 | Jonah Bennett

Cleveland Clinic CEO Toby Cosgrove dropped out of the running for secretary of veterans affairs shortly after businessman Luis Quinonez declared he was withdrawing.

The Department of Veterans Affairs position is proving one of the hardest for President-elect Donald Trump to fill in his cabinet, Military Times reports.

Quinonez dropped out over health issues. Sources say he has been battling cancer for the last several years. The Trump team wanted him partly because of his experience in the health care industry and also because he’s Hispanic.

Congress needs to pass legislation to allow the head of the VA to fire, arrest and prosecute people at will.

No body wants the job because they know there are going to be standards that have to be actually met and they are going to have to work to meet them.

VA should be run by Catholics. They have the best hospitals.

I believe he should ask Mitt to take on this tremendous task. I believe that Mitt is up to it.

That is where I thought Romney should be placed from day one, when I heard that he was going to meet with Trump.

As long as the VA is populated and run by unionized workers that can’t be fired, there is no fixing it.

The only option is to get rid of VA health care and contract out to private insurance.

Do Hispanics have a reputaion as being good in healthcare management (just a Germans have a reputaion for being good engineers)? “

Sure, Michael Moore made a movie about how Cuba's system was the greatest in the world ever!

Some appointee posts just take a while to fill.

IIRC, BJ’s first Attorney General was the 4th contender. The other 3 withdrew on their own or were hounded out by scandals/misdeeds.

Jim Webb couldn’t run a whore house! Worst Secretary of the Navy I ever saw! Nothing more than a useless legend in his own mind with none of his father’s management skills. Big crybaby when he doesn’t get his own way.

Tough and thankless job.

Not surprise that nobody wants it.

Around Atlanta, the major hospitals are buying up many of the smaller, outlying hospitals. Maybe the. Government should sell the VA hospitals to these majors (all over the country) with the provision that they maintain a “Veterans Wing” in all their locations, treating vets for free, with reimbursement from the VA.

That would get the govt out of the hospital business, and put veterans into local, medical run centers where they know what they’re doing, under more responsible management.

The govt’s only role would be financial, and maybe, eligibility.

Yes, because it has recently been discovered that chili peppers cure almost everything including cancer

Yet he has been battling cancer for the last several years. Someone needs to have him eat more chili peppers I guess. BTW, I read that article about peppers too. I am yanking your chain in jest, but am not trying to make a joke regarding this man who is battling cancer. My heart and prayers go out out to him.

You are well read.

Sorry, you can't jerk my chain for two reasons:

You are observant and analytical enough to understand my comments without sarcasm tags or other disclaimers.

I am observant and analytical enough to understand your comments accurately.

None of the Daily Squaller piece was about Luis Quinonez. It was a Prog Narrative hit piece to color President Trump as incompetent and unable, while covering for Obama - Rat Treason targeting US Military Veterans.

You and I have thoughts and prayers for Luis Quinonez, the Rats and Enemedia have only a use for him.

I can understand why nobody is excited to voluntarily take a job like VA.
It is a ‘tar baby’ job.
Had a job like that once...Army...was doing very well as XO of a Company in the Battalion.
Bn CO called me the best XO/TO in the Battalion.
Bn had a large, sprawling HQ Company, with assets spread over miles, understaffed, the raiding grounds when new units were created and the dumping grounds for unwanted troops.
Old CO got about by resigning his Commission.
Old CO told me to stay away from it...was a career buster.
Yep, it was...couldn’t get needed resources.
Got my career ass kicked in it.

Always best to avoid walking into a near certain failure situation.
VA is a huge mess, as most all agree.
It would be a major effort requiring major resources to do a fix.
Better to give it to some expendable dork, that can be the fall guy when the reform effort fails....maybe reach across the isle?

The incentives are wrong. No one can make the system work without thuggish force.

I figured you were, but just so anyone reading my comment they too understood where I was coming from.

I actually love hot peppers, so I had to read that article for sure. 8>)

I find the daily caller (at least I think it has been them) has been pretty positive about Trump. Perhaps this person does not share that sentiment? They are certainly better than the usual sites that you know without reading one word what road they will travel down. Of course there have actually been exceptions from those sites as well. Which of course makes you wonder how that got bu the editors.

We both know though that Trump picks those he thinks will do the best job, and not by some politically correct measure.

Do Hispanics have a reputaion as being good in healthcare management

I doubt that was even hinted at as a reason by the Trump administration. It sounds very much like a bit that was tossed in to the article in order to cast aspersions on Trump.
