People over age 16 who are no longer working or even looking for work, for whatever reason (retirement, school, personal preference, or gave up), are counted as not participating in the labor force.

I guess I'll have to flog my 72-year-old parents back into the job market so the number will drop.

Well, this is one way to get to full employment — make the people who want jobs too depressed and frustrated to look anymore. And for the people who really don’t want to work, loosen up the eligibility for Welfare and Food Stamps, give them public housing and Obamacare and free Obama phones and let them sit on their asses all day watching cable TV and smoking pot.

We pay illegal central Americans to pick crops and cut lawns, or make all our shoes and iPhones in China and Vietnam, while 95 million Americans sit at home.

This occurs because we have the world’s reserve currency, which is printed and completely unbacked, and a Federal Reserve which supports massive government debt and suppresses interest rates to zero. It all supports the progressive-left nanny state which maintains this absurd situation.

Plus the Unemployed U-3 numbers ( totals to 102 Million adults not working ) and the Under-employed who can not find full time jobs = U-6 numbers.

Question: one would expect the workforce number to decrease since by now a good portion of the baby-boom generation has reached retirement age (65). Is there an upper age limit placed on the out-of-the-workforce number? To put it another way, is a 70 year old boomer included in that number? Or.ore likely, does it reflect the 50 to 65 year old unemployeds as companies manage healthcare cost risk by pushing out the older workers in favor of hiring the younger (and cheaper) set?

I do know if that you are over 50, your chance of getting hired on absent a critical skill is close to nil.

From what I can figure out around 60 million of that total number are retired or disabled collecting Social Security so that leaves 35 million young adults actually unemployed. I believe that represents more than a 4.7 unemployment rate. Does anyone make sense out of this?

This shouldn’t surprise anyone who takes a weekday off of work. There are non working people everywhere on the roads, in the stores, out to eat.

It would help to know how many of that number were those who went on SS (retirees) in that period.

Lots of retiring baby boomers out there. Many more to come.

The SS ponzi scheme should be crumbling apart any day now.

With Trump ascendant, will economic data/statistics become “meaningful” to the media again?

Record 95,102,000 Americans Not in Labor Force; Number Grew 18% Since Obama Took Office in 2009

Which President Trump needs to emphasize in his inauguration speech, spelling out the true unemployment rate, how it has been lied about and promising to require that truthful data be released so the progress can be monitored during his administration.
