You are only searched going to terminals. Areas to wait for people or picking up baggage is outside that search area.
Which works for me as i carry. Since you cant get to gates to meet or see people off anymore.

So far chicago has this airport beat by 718 gun murders in 2016. I would rather they shut that hole down first.

International arrivals claim baggage in a secure area then exit past Customs officers to a public access meeting and pick up area. For domestic arrivals just about anyone can pull up in a car as if to pick up an arriving passenger and walk into the carousel area. It would be a major pain if that was changed, but overreaction to these incidents has been the norm for the last fifty plus years, ever since hijacking started in the sixties. Flying used to be a pleasurable experience. Now it’s a gauntlet and certainly something the terrorists take pride in “achieving”.
