Yes, Heavily armed LEO inside the airport would be a great deterrent. I think the heavies mainly hang outside in the shadows waiting to spring into action.
25 years ago the Zurich airport was heavily armed and using sniffer dogs.

Depending on what airport you may have one checkpoint for 20 to hundreds of gates. Everyone is in the same place at the same time. At baggage claim you have staggered baggage arrivals for only a few flights at any given time with people much more spread out in random areas, not a predictable pattern.
