Bill calls for abolishment of ATF

A bill has been proposed in U.S. House of Representatives that would eliminate the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

The ATF Elimination Act, which was reintroduced by Wisconsin Rep. Jim Sensenbrenner on Thursday, calls for an ATF hiring freeze and would transfer the ATF’s current responsibilities to the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Drug Enforcement Administration.

According to the bill, the FBI and DEA would need to submit a plan for scaling down ATF affairs within 180 days of the bill’s enactment into law. Within one year, the FBI would have to issue a report to the General Services Administration regarding ATF property that will either need to be transferred or excessed.

In a press release Thursday, Rep. Sensenbrenner issued the following statement regarding the proposal:

Despite our country being trillions of dollars in debt, government spending continues to rise. Common sense budgeting solutions are necessary, and the ATF Elimination Act is one measure we can take to reduce spending, redundancy, and practice responsible governance. The ATF is a scandal-ridden, largely duplicative agency that has been branded by failure and lacks a clear mission. It is plagued by backlogs, funding gaps, hiring challenges, and a lack of leadership. These facts make it a logical place to begin draining the swamp and acting in the best interest of the American taxpayer.

The ATF drew heat in 2011 after the so-called Fast and Furious operation, in which the ATF willingly let Mexican drug cartels buy illegal firearms in order to track the guns and then arrest the criminals carrying them.

The operation went drastically wrong as agents lost track of the guns. Instead of leading to arrests of high-ranking cartel members, the firearms were reportedly used in numerous murders in Mexico.

I’ll go you one better... Remove Section 922 from USC Title 18 in its entirety.

We should have a Constitutional amendment which stipulates that EVERY alphabet soup agency, once abolished, can NEVER be re-born for ANY reason!!!

"the firearms were reportedly used in numerous murders in Mexico."

And also used at the Bataclan terrorist attack in Paris. At least that's what I read somewhere.

I hate to be the wet blanket at this beach party but this bill first will have to get out of committee and make it to the floor.

Even if this bill makes it to Trumps desk it will have very little positive effect on the lives of every day FFL holders or firearms owners.

The current employees of the ATF are not going to lose their jobs. The current laws on the books regulating firearms are not going to be repealed.

About all that will happen is that AFT employees might get a change of their business address and the government will spend millions on changes to stationary and forms. .

I don’t see anything here to give me hope that gun laws are going to be enforced more efficiently or more justly.

Changing the name of the organization is putting lipstick on a pig and naming it Marylyn hoping that the public will fall in love.

I’m sorry to disagree with you about the uselessness of the Education Department. It has been VERY useful in creating the easily molded little snowflake robots necessary for the “1984” society we’re teetering on the brink of. (I know what you meant!)

Thank God for Trump and let’s all pray that he’s in time to lead us in saving our country and taking it back!

Let’s add in keeping the Treasury Department and bulldozing the Fed.

“While you’re at it, how about an inventory of the weapons/ammunition the federal agencies have acquired during the Obama Administration.”

Like you and most people I figured they expected to use that against us. However, someone (sorry I don’t remember who) posted that the bulk of that ammo went to ISIS and other terrorists. Could be they sent some to our enemies and kept some for us.

Meh. The ATF is incompetent. And exactly who you want enforcing rules such as minimum length of shotgun barrels, etc. Get rid of the idiotic laws and rules ATF is enforcing first. I have yet to see one of the eunuchs on our side proposing a complete repeal of GCA 68. Start there.

That IS a scam. The only point in letting them “test” it for you would be if the outcome, should it be one of those, was better than if you had one and they found out about it on their own. Anyone taking theirs in would have to be an idiot.

will this bill ever see the light of day or will it languish in the dark never to be voted on like many R bills?

Correct. My father was a Treasury Dep. Lawdog. He started in Salt Lake (where I was born circa 1970). He would tell us kids about the nutjobs hired into the ATF. One story that got him fired up was about those guys hunting elk and taking irresponsible shots (500 meters or more), he had no respect for any of them. He called them a malignancy on the Dept. He left the gov in 1980 to help average joe citizen.
