I’ve heard about this technique.

Shoot, shut up, wait for a lawyer when making a statement.

And then, it should be “He pointed his gun at me and I was afraid for my life and I protected it.”

I’ve seen that tactic mentioned more than once in gun mags.

Can’t this get you in trouble in some states? Especially if the perp is hit in the back

Oh, I agree. I was just commenting on what I’d do to keep the image of “so then I lit him up” from propagating uncontrollably and being misinterpreted, that’s all.

Shoot, shut up, wait for a lawyer when making a statement.

Amen to that!

Remember the ACRONYM AIM in making your decision to shoot someone in self defense or to protect individuals in your vicinity!!

A for ACCESS (Does the perp have access to you or to others?)

I for INTENT (Does the perp have intent to do you or others harm?)

M for MEANS (Does the perp have the means to do you harm?)

IF these three are met ... and you have nanoseconds to make that decision - make the decision and defend yourself and others in the vicinity! When you make a statement THROUGH your lawyer you will survive the legal system with the best odds!

That one happened after he was already down and was reaching for the gun he dropped after the first shot right there on the front.

Yes, I recall a case that happened in Chicago of all places, an older black gentleman was minding his own business and was approached by a guy with a weapon. Honestly I don't recall if it was a knife or a gun or what.

He reached into his front pocket, where his (illegally carried, but it saved his life) revolver was... also some money. He let the bad guy see the money, which he took away from him, but he lost track of what our friend was doing with his right hand. It was already on the revolver and an instant later the criminal was on the ground.

The interview with the guy was on some national news program, I recall him saying "I showed him money..." then asking, "Who was there for me to call out to?"

Anyway nice move in both cases. One might suppose that it's good to train and target shoot, etc, but a little street-wisdom, if one has it, is a good secret weapon.

The robber was already pointing his gun in someone else’s face, so it’s okay..................

Yep. BTW, I tell people, when thinking about running down protesters blocking the street, that the defense is simple. You just say (after you get a lawyer, of course), “All I could see was those videos of Reginal Denny getting mentally crippled and maimed for life. Those images of bricks landing on his head just kept flashing through my mind.”

Certainly not in KY, where I live.

The thing is, he is not turning around to leave. He’s trying to grab your stuff. i.e. it is in the middle of the crime, not after.

Technique worked quite well, at least on screen, for Bill Munny (Eastwood) in Unforgiven. He throws his now-spent shotgun at Little Bill for the distraction. Classic scene!

He didn't deserve to die like that, he was building a house.

Yep, John Wayne would turn and throw his cowboy hat at someone sneaking up on him, then would have six-gun drawn and ready to fire by the time they recovered.
