I have to travel to Hawaii on business and thought while there I should visit the Pearl Harbor memorial. I'd be grateful for any suggestions anyone may have on how to get the most out of the visit. Thanks so much

Dittos, don’t forget the tissues. Wife and I both wept silently, reverently. Was very impressed with the movie you watch before departing to memorial. No PC, re-writing history. Very accurate portrayal of brutal, sadistic, Japanese genocide in China. I was amazed. At least 1/2 of the visitors on our boat appeared to be Japanese. I harbor no real animosity, but when encountering Japanese visitors I just smiled, bowed, and whispered that my Mom worked at the plant where the Enola Gay was built. The Martin plant in Omaha built clearly the best B-29’s, ergo, Col Tibbets came to Omaha to personally select the planes for the mission. My Mom actually worked on the B-26 Martin Marauders. I’ve always been so proud of her contribution. My Dad wound up going to Korea instead of invading Japan. His unit was tasked with rounding up recalcitrant Japanese soldiers. The GI’s were billeted in a Kamikaze factory in southern Korea. The invasion would have been even worse than we imagined. The planes they were building in Korea were crude to the extreme, but in great numbers and would’ve done untold damage if even a third of them got through. Re: Pearl Harbor, the submariners memorial was very moving. Seeing all of the names from all of the lost boats really made it even more real. Have a great visit to sacred ground, God Bless America.
Very nice!
Thank your son for his service!
Thanks couldn’t find it - disk file error(brain fart). Found it now, the Wahoo was lost off Japan and mentioned at the memorial - she is “on eternal patrol”.
Don’t forget the Pacific Aviation Museum on Ford Island- just down the road from the USS Missouri.
If you know any military, try to get on the Admirals Barge tour (if it still runs; been awhile since I used it) Also, visit Jameson’s By the Sea (Haleiva sp?) for the best Dining experience! Get reservations for sunset time.
I saw the tears in 1988. I was transfixed. I couldn’t stop staring.
All those years, and she’s still shedding tears.

It is said that the tears will stop when the last Arizona survivor passes away.
We are planning to go there in a few months. Go to “Recreation.gov”, enter Pearl Harbor, select “Historic Sites”. You can buy the Passport to Pearl Harbor two months in advance, which covers the Arizona Memorial, Missouri, Bowfin, and the Pacific Air Museum. Only 30-some dollars each.

Haleiwa——there is no “v” in the Hawaiian language.
.
True story-I had a somewhat hot-tempered co-worker (now retired)who was in the Navy, stationed in Hawaii. While visiting Pearl Harbor, he was asked by some Japanese tourists where the U.S.S. Arizona was. He turned to them with a scowl and screamed, “Right down there where you put, you mother*******”!
If you knew him, you could picture that perfectly in your mind!
Be sure to visit the Submarine base and tour the Bowfin.
You will not forget the enormity of distances traveled, and what they did, with so little.
I hear that. I’m a lawyer, and there’s a story about an antitrust case that was pending in federal court in Philadelphia in the 1970’s before a judge who’d been on the bench for a loooooong time. The defendants were a bunch of Japanese electronics companies, though they were of course represented by American law firms. Early in the case the lawyers representing the defendants asked for more time to answer some filing; requests like that, in complex cases, are routinely granted, and I think even the plaintiffs’ lawyers said they had no objection. But the judge was furious, and said “your clients didn’t give anybody an extension on December 7, 1941! Denied.”
If you have the time, visit the Punchbowl. Plan on an hour to just sit and look at row after row of gravestones.
The area is served by Public Transpo - the buses are clean and on time for the most part. Every time we asked for directions, or about a location, we got good directions.
I was lucky enough to have worked the ham station in the Mo. KH6BB/my call. Great fun. Amazing how operating from the Mo seems to multiply the power of your signal.
Also, reading a short history of the major battles in the PTO will help put things in perspective.
HAve fun!
All of the above plus hike to top of Diamond Head and visit the coastal defense museum at FT DERUSSY west (?) Of waikiki. The zoo is nice too. Hawaiian breakfasts are the best: spam, portuguese sausage, rice, eggs
