In the late 1960s, Angela Davis was at the forefront of civil unrest.
She had been fired from her teaching position at UCLA because of her association with the Communist party. She would go on to appear on the FBI’s Most Wanted List and serve 18 months in jail for suspicion of involvement in a courtroom armed take-over.

Angela Yvonne Davis is a tenured professor in the “History of Consciousness” program at the University of California - Santa Cruz. A former member of the Black Panther Party, she is currently a “University Professor,” one of only seven in the entire California University system, which entitles her to a six-figure salary and a research assistant. This income is supplemented by speaking fees ranging from $10,000 to $20,000 per appearance on college campuses, where she is an icon of radical faculty, administrators, and students. Davis has also taught at UCLA and the State University of New York at Stony Brook.

"On suspicion." Yes. She had purchased the guns used by a young associate in the attempt to spring three prisoners, one of them another Davis associate, on trial for a prison killing from the Marin County Courthouse. This turned into a kidnapping and a shootout that ended with four dead, including the judge. When police went to visit Ms. Davis about her possible knowledge of these events, it turned out that she had gone underground at the time of the courthouse attack. Investigators thought this was a suspicious pattern. The left, of course, has always argued that the investigators were just prejudiced.
