Muhammad Ali's son detained at Florida airport for his 'Arabic-sounding name'

In a shocking development, it has been revealed that the son of legendary boxer Muhammad Ali was detained for hours by immigration officials earlier this month at a Florida airport, and was repeatedly asked about his religion.

Muhammad Ali Jr, 44, and his mother, Khalilah Camacho-Ali, the first wife of Muhammad Ali, were arriving at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport on February 7 after an event in Jamaica, when they were pulled aside while going through customs because of their 'Arabic-sounding names', reports the USA Today quoting Ali's family friend and lawyer Chris Mancini.

Camacho-Ali was let go after she showed them a photo of herself with her ex-husband, however, her son was not so lucky as he was badgered for two straight hours, where he was repeatedly asked 'Where did you get your name from?' and 'Are you Muslim?'

When Ali Jr responded that yes, he is a Muslim, the officers kept questioning him about his religion and where he was born.

Mancini said he and the Ali family are contemplating filing a federal lawsuit and are currently trying to find out how many other people have been subjected to the same treatment as Ali Jr.

"Imagine walking into an airport and being asked about your religion. This is classic customs profiling," he said.

Mancini also emphasised that the line of questioning was clearly designed to produce answers that corroborate what officials want to hear, adding that neither Camacho-Ali nor Ali Jr have ever been subjected to detainment before, despite extensive global travel experience.

"To the Ali family, it's crystal clear that this is directly linked to Mr Trump's efforts to ban Muslims from the United States," Mancini said, referring to President Trump's executive order signed Jan 27 that instituted a ban for citizens of seven predominantly Muslim countries.

Meanwhile, Trump promised the nation on Friday that his administration is working on a 'brand new action' that will foil attempts by potential terrorist elements from entering the United States.

Addressing the Conservative Political Action Conference, the President emphasised that he will not disappoint Americans.

White House officials have said a new immigration ban will be released shortly after his first one sparked protests and faced a blockade in court, reports the Guardian.

I can understand scrutiny for drugs, but that’s not what the article says in that instance.

A 5 year old boy, a US citizen of Iranian heritage, was handcuffed and detained in custody in US airport for hours after Trump’s initial immigration EO in January.

No doubt we all wanna feel safe. But sometimes the idiots who enforce these laws are, well, idiots. They give more reason for others to scream “discrimination & racism”.

Its because of the Mohammedans that all of us have to go through this TSA hassle. I cuss Mohammed every time I fly and am dragging all my belt, computer, shoes, etc. from the TSA station over to a corner and reassemble everything before I continue through the terminal to my gate.

Ok here’s what I think. I think this was a set up to legally challenge the new eo. This way they would have standing to mount a challenge. Main problem is his mother was treated fine but he was not. Why didn’t mom vouch for son and clear it all up. Or son prove who he was. Its because he was acting either belligerent or purposely evasive in order to bait the officers. It doesn’t make sense that mom was released and son was detained.

Also I doubt that a boy of 5 was handcuffed.

The boy evidently was not travelling with his mother, but with another family member, both arriving at Dulles airport.

The boy was definitely cuffed and detained for several hours before being released, while his mother (also a US citizen living in Maryland) was waiting for him at the airport.

In fact, as far as it was reported, the US authorities were informed in advance by the boy’s family in the US of his arrival.

Even if they had any suspicion of the boy being a threat, there is absolutely no excuse for not processing him quickly given his age, or allowing access to a lawyer. He is/was a US Citizen and a minor.

A 5 year old boy ‘acting either belligerent or purposely evasive in order to bait the officers” ? Are you serious?! Do you have kids?

Muhammad Ali refused to serve his country. Then he took up a garbage false religion that worships a pedophile rapist psychopath. Couldn’t care less what happens to his spawn,

No of course not. I was referring to the Ali story. As for the 5 year old maybe they can’t be responsible to watch him and have to restrain him for his own safety. Its unfortunate. But its time for us to sever ties with terror nations they have hurt us enough. I want strict controls.

I want strict controls too along with reasonable enforcement of controls, and uniform application of laws across the board.

That means if we want to apply a law to a certain group of ‘terror nations’ (Iran, Iraq, Syria, etc..) and not others (Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Qatar, Afghanistan, as examples) then let’s be upfront and say we are selective about terrorists.

Also, if we want to create second class US citizens again, we should be clear about that too. It really does remind very much of WW2 and how American-Japanese were treated versus American-Germans.

He was not cuffed, and that picture that they used was from an incident in 2015:

Yes, the picture in your link is not about the boy or event I was discussing, nor the same one in the link I provided.

You have to start somewhere. I would be for expanding the list. I do think that the 7 countries were chosen based on our inability to vet emigres. I don’t think Islam is compatible with western civilization. In the long run there will be a world war between Islam and the free world if we are lucky and they haven’t already taken over from within. Here we are worried about isolated occurrences of increased scrutiny. It seems silly to me especially while people are being slaughtered all over the globe in the name of Islam.

You make a couple of salient points.
I think we can all do great without Islam.
However, we in the West didn’t have much of a problem with Islam until 9/11. About which I still like to see a full, not in parts redacted, report.
Ever since, our world & much in it has changed, and not for better. In fact, it gets worse every year.
Main point being that most Islamic terrorism is actually ME and North Africa focused, and we could minimize it by staying out of that region.

DHS has been compiling a report (data based, not political) which says Islamic terrorism from those 7 countries is actually regionally focused.

every time I’ve come back from Jamaica, I’ve had all my stuff gone over with a fine tooth comb. Socks turned inside out, that sniffer wand thing, full pat down, etc.

I think I must look like a 70 year old pot smuggler or something to customs.

The article does not contain any statement from Customs, only attorney Mancini’s statements. Mancini states “it’s crystal clear that this is directly linked to Mr Trump’s efforts to ban Muslims from the United States” - a ban which does not exist.

My 80 year old mom and 55 year old sister got pulled over in mom’s Florida Cadillac - trunk loaded down with sister’s luggage. Spent an hour on the side of a highway (headed north) in Iowa as they went through the entire car!

Back in the day I was loading up military-style containers at the airport. Goofy hat, scruffy beard, and numerous containers. The security (drug?) dog had a real hard time keeping his eye off of me! Every time I would grab another item that dog was watching me! His handler didn’t seem too concerned though.

Here’s my take on that, and this is just my opinion that I formed around the time that all this happened and maintained up until I ended up in the same situation. I make no certifications about absolute correctness of timeline and events - this is just my recollection and impression.

There is Cassius Clay, and there is Elvis Presley. Both Elvis and Cassius were of that certain age during a time of drafts, military service requirements for able-bodied young men, and they were relatively qualified to do that service.

One man, Elvis, suspended a rocketing career and did his time in the Army; he exited the Army and picked up his career and propered. The other man, Cassius, became a Muslim and changed his name to Mohammed Ali and joined the world of peaceful Islam were he became a conscientious objector refusing induction and actually got nailed and convicted for draft evasion (later overturned by USSC).

Released from that conviction, Mohammed Ali was free to continue the peace of Islam by climbing into the ring and continually slugging it out for mega dollars.
