Boston Dynamics unveils 'nightmare-inducing' hybrid robot (video)

Google-owned robotics firm and “nightmare” factory Boston Dynamics has released video of its latest creation: a two-wheeled, four-legged hybrid robot named Handle.

The robot can stand on four legs, like Boston Dynamics’ previous creations such as BigDog and Spot. But at the end of its back two legs are two stabilised wheels, which let it stand up vertically and roll around at speeds of up to nine miles per hour. Think “Terminator riding on a hoverboard” and you’ll have a pretty good idea of the impression Handle gives off.

Boston Dynamics says the reason for the hybrid design is the simplicity it affords: rather than needing the complex joints of the fully-quadrupedal bots, Handle’s wheels can speed it around with little difficulty, while its front legs can be used for balance and for carrying loads of up to 50kg.

“Handle uses many of the same dynamics, balance and mobile manipulation principles found in the quadruped and biped robots we build,” Boston Dynamics said, “but with only about 10 actuated joints, it is significantly less complex. Wheels are efficient on flat surfaces while legs can go almost anywhere: by combining wheels and legs, Handle can have the best of both worlds.” The video does not, however, show Handle walking rather that scooting around on its wheels.

A physical therapist will tell me what to do to maintain range of motion and avoid additional damage. Beyond that, it’s mostly personal effort. Dr. Hall recommended a couple of practices, and Caroline in my prayer group has a PT she likes. I will call around and see what they charge, since we’re paying cash.

That would be my choice. Just learn the things NOT to do and you can progress at your own pace.

the keyboard fell victim to small fingers wanting to make a joyful noise.

That is my primary hypothesis..

Great minds! I no longer have a keyboard, but I wish I did. There is a small, one octave keyboard on my Nook, but it's not handy enough to play with when the mood strikes.

Maybe after I get a TV for the bedroom (being ill is not much fun) I'll see about getting a small keyboard.

After I move, of course.

I saw a T-Shirt this weekend. It said:

But
First
Coffee

Thanks

note the time stamp on the photo post...that dead time before the first pot of coffee is ready leads to pondering on strange matters, such as the tesserae formed by the random glaze cracking. Or is it random...hmmm?

Wow. What a pretty kitteh!

I’m here. I don’t know how I’m doing, but I’m here. In a few minutes, I’ll go in and fold the clothes and put them away and have a breathing treatment, and then I’ll be ready to start my day.

Because of the nausea, most of the vegetables I got last week had to be thrown out. The only thing that saved the meat was the fact that it is frozen. (Grilled chicken breast slices.)

When I’m done with the clothes and breathing treatment, I’ll sort my pills. I now remember why I took them in the first place. *sigh* Nothing like a “little” reminder.

Hope you feel better soon!

I was raining this morning, but has stopped for now. After lunch, James and I will go for our Constitutional. I will wear a jacket.

Wellnow. The nausea has finally abated, but I find I’m out of food. To ignore that, I decided to hunt for certain documents that all belong with the most important documents I have, outside of genealogy.

In order to do that, I had to drag out the Banker’s Boxes — all eight of them because none of them are marked. *sigh*

So I have emptied one, but the contents need to be filed and the box needs to be labeled. I’ve decided I am NOT moving JUNK to Utah! It will be papers I need for my descendants or for future reference for me, before I die. So I now have a stack of papers that need to be shredded. What fun. At least I now have oil for the shredder teeth.

I wonder how much other stuff I’ll be tossing out before I finally move? Still this needs to be done.

I found one box on the bottom that was falling apart and I didn’t know it. Whoever helped me move in here tried to tape the box, and that was almost disastrous when I went to move it. They had put the box on the bottom of the stack so it wasn’t easily noticeable. That irritated me. I see them in church every time I go; but they didn’t even bother to tell me it had broken.

Anyway, my week will be full with just these. Maybe next week, I’ll start on the yarn. Once I get through the stuff I’m weeding out, the packing will be easy.

I’m going to be working on *clearance* in the next few days, too. If Elen goes to camp this weekend, that will leave two weeks before Tom goes, in which we can use his impressive size and strength for the tearing down, cleaning, and rebuilding of the bedrooms, with very much stuff going OUT.

Back in the day, it was called “spring cleaning.”

My shredder finally gave up the ghost. I knew it wasn’t going to last long, but I was hoping it would last through this purge. Ohwell. Payday is around the corner and I’ll put it on my list.

(I saw what you did, there. Thanks!)

I’ll go out with Charlie around 0915 and when I come back in, I will sort the stuff I have set aside and try to find a category for each one. Maybe I’ll just put things into their own file, rather than try to group them by subject. I’m getting to old to be so OCD, I think! :o])

Zeke was just here, getting my signature, and was talking about Crazy Frank wanting to keep the letter for a few days so he could “think about it.” He wants it so he can show it to the members of the quickly shrinking council, I’m sure.

It seems one gal just flat resigned, one is in the hospital and probably won’t be able to function on the council in any position, and the others are bickering among themselves. One position has been rendered obsolete by the Privacy Act, so it looks like a good time for a recall. With three of the five people needed for a council being out, even two alternates aren’t going to fill the bill.

And now, back to the salt mine.

Though Zeke was only here about five minutes, he told me Charlie was on the shuttle to go shopping, so I won’t have any interruptions for a while.

The boxes I’ve picked to sort through have yielded a gold mine of things that I had looked for and knew I had “someplace.” Some of them will go into appropriate files and others will go into a “Master” pocket file so I don’t have to kill myself looking for a master copy of something to print up! YAY!

Seen an adult one of these hanging out in Beverly Hills.

Outrageously pretty animal. Expensive also into the thousands I think.
