Go figure: New free agent Colin Kaepernick decides to stand for national anthem next season

He told the world he was opting out of his 49ers contract to test the market two days ago. Two days later, meet the newly de-woke-ified Colin Kaepernick.

Quarterback Colin Kaepernick will stand during the national anthem next season, sources told ESPN on Thursday.

Kaepernick no longer wants his method of protest to detract from the positive change he believes has been created, sources told ESPN. He also said the amount of national discussion on social inequality — as well as support from other athletes nationwide, including NFL and NBA players — affirmed the message he was trying to deliver…

Kaepernick said the discussion about social inequality should include all people, and he plans to continue raising money for the underprivileged and presenting the “Know Your Rights” camps nationwide that he started last year.

“No longer wants his method of protest to detract from the positive change he believes has been created” is quite the gassy euphemism for dropping his protest now that it might hurt his paycheck. This guy must be the only liberal in America who’s less eager to protest now that Trump is in office.

His numbers were decent enough last season to warrant some free-agent interest now (16 TDs, 4 INTs) but not so hot as to considerably lighten the load of his political baggage for an interested GM. A possible compromise: He’ll drop the anthem protest, sure, but he’ll have to do something new and more low-key to save face among his left-wing fans. Maybe he’ll take to wearing one of those Castro t-shirts he seems to like so much, or the socks with pigs as police, on the sidelines before games? He has to do something to clear the air of the stench of “sellout.” It’s overpowering.

Via Breitbart, here’s Colin Cowherd reflecting on the obvious.

I hope no team is stupid enough to believe his mouth will stay shut once he gets a contract. Even if they write it in the contract, he’ll find a way to make his real thoughts known. He’ll be a nightmare for any team, unless, of course, they really support his position.

Sit, stand, or kneel, colon — As long as you do it somewhere other than SF, I’ll be happy.

No big mystery here - Kaepernick will void his contract with the 49ers today (before they can cut him), and his new agent has obviously told him to stop his social-activist posing if he wants to catch on with another team. Money talks and BS walks.

Next season, he will stand for the national anthem (or not) as a spectator not a player.

BOTTOM LINE FOR TEAMS: How good is he in the field?

16 TDs, 4 INTs. He's still got an arm like a cannon and his mobility is dangerous - not many LBs or DBs can run him down from behind. But he still bails from clean pockets and still locks on to his primary receiver. He's about to turn 30, so this is about as good as he will ever be. The 49ers need to move on, but a good team with a solid OL and good receivers who are just missing a QB could do worse.

I hope no one will hire him.
He only changed this because he wants money.

Well, the register at Arby’s doesn’t have a chair, so he’s pretty much gonna have to stand.

If he stands for the National Anthem next year then I think he’ll be doing it in his living room.

None of which matters at all. Football teams are in the entertainment industry. No alleged skills he has will be able to overcome his stench amongst the people who actually watch football. Any team that takes him on will deserve the inevitable revenue loss they will see.
