U.S. electronics chain RadioShack Corp filed for bankruptcy on Wednesday for the second time in a little over two years, faced with a challenging retail environment and an unsatisfying partnership with wireless provider Sprint Corp.

The Chapter 11 filing comes after RadioShack, owned by General Wireless Operations Inc, tried to revitalize its business by co-branding stores with the wireless carrier in an effort to compete against their largest rivals.

General Wireless, which acquired the RadioShack brand in 2015, listed assets and liabilities in the range of $100 million to $500 million in the U.S. bankruptcy court for the Delaware district.

I’m just amazed we’re still talking about them in the year 2017. What is their function? Who still buys electronics parts to build things as a hobby?

The Keith Richards of businesses. I'm surprised they didn't die out sooner.

Should have been in talks with Best Buy and get bought out or something.

I was in a store yesterday. The clerk said he didn’t know the plans but I noticed there were no laptops, tablets or phones on the shelf. Just small accessories.

One in Richardson, Tx, has been having its going out of business sale for several weeks now. They’ve had a ‘One day left’ sign up for about a week. I keep going by to see if there are any deals, but their half off closeout appears to be about the same on most items as the everyday price at Fry’s. If they get to 80% or the $1 for everything in a bag final hours sale, I’ll probably drop a few dollars.

I thought they went out of business years ago right about the time Hollywood Video and Blockbuster disappeared.

First thing they do before posting the going out of business sign is pull all the Sprint inventory. Sounds like you need to check back in a couple of weeks.

At one point in time, that tape player was the top of the line. You couldn’t get more bang for your buck. This must be late 60’s or early 70’s. Look at the ‘Mod’ clothing. The girl is doing either The Jerk or The Swim.

It has been decades since visiting one of their stores.
Off the top of my head, I cannot think of an item they sell that I might need.

Nothing but cell phones etc and the “clerks” ie: “jerks” had no knowledge of anything!

Boy, are you behind the times. The “electronic parts” part of their business is like four drawers in the back (maybe 0.5% of sales).

Ah...how about DigiKey, Mouser (part of TT Electronics, Berkshire Hathaway), Adafruit, MCM, Parts Express, Sparkfun, MakerShed, and several dozen more?

ELectronics as a hobby is bigger than ever. People even make their own 3D printers, ya know? ;-) And with open source software and cheap building blocks like Arduino and Raspberry Pis, hobbyists are making more things that turn into small businesses, often sourcing PC boards, wi-fi, bluetooth, and GPS modules, and other components directly from China and performing the value-added processes here. All good.

Radio Shack simply ran itself into the ground trying to sell phone plans instead of riding the S-curve of the Next Big Thing.

Well of course that cassette tape deck sounded terrific, it had a custom flywheel, for goodness sake!

I actually do buy parts, not really a hobby unless fixing things is a hobby :D

The problem with Radio Shack? They never have what I want/need and have no idea when they would - c'mon, "shrink tubing", it's not an exotic element

I hate to see them leave. Should have started selling
Cable TV and Internet.

They sued AutoShack and won back in the day.

Hence AutoZone.

This was my "baby" back in the day.

I saved up my money from my paper route to buy it.
