Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) on Thursday shot back at Sen. John McCain after the Arizona Republican accused Paul of working for Russian President Vladimir Putin.
"I think he makes a really, really strong case for term limits," Paul said on MSNBC's "Morning Joe." "I think maybe he's past his prime; I think maybe he's gotten a little bit unhinged."
McCain made the claims Wednesday from the Senate floor.
"He has no justification for his objection to having a small nation be part of NATO that is under assault from the Russians," McCain said.
"The senator from Kentucky is now working for Vladimir Putin." The comments came after McCain asked for unanimous consent to set up a vote on a treaty on Montenegro joining NATO, but Paul objected.
Under Senate rules, any one senator can object to a unanimous consent request. McCain warned before asking for consent that any senator who objected was "carrying out the desires and ambitions of Putin."
Paul said the U.S. military is already stretched thin.
On Thursday, the Kentucky Republican said there can be a "rational discussion" about the pros and cons of expanding NATO.
"We currently have ... combat troops in about six nations. We have troops actively just stationed in probably a couple dozen others," he said.
"We have a $20 trillion debt."
Paul said McCain's foreign policy would "greatly endanger" the country and "greatly overextend us."
"And there has to be the thought whether or not it's in our national interest to pledge to get involved with a war if Montenegro has an altercation with anyone," he said.
"Another argument is that, when you ask the people of Montenegro, only about 40 percent or slightly less are actually in favor of this," he said, adding there are a lot of considerations.

McCain is very generous with our security. I love our Senator Rand Paul.
Unhinged!?
You know that porch screen door that goes flying by Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz tornado scene?
Something weird is going on with McCain. He is now attacking fellow senators. This guy is breaking down before our eyes
100% in agreement with Rand Paul...Term limits...
LOL.
God Bless You, Rand Paul! Take him down, and I’ll contribute to your “election”.
McCain should cash it in. He is old enough he does not really follow what is going on faithfully. He is hell-bent on making statements that will get his name in the news of the day. Other than that, he serves no useful purpose.
Likewise, when reading of Custer's exploits as a troop commander in the Civil War, it's clear he also took big risks. President Grant, for example, criticized Custer's actions at Little Bighorn, saying:
We can say for certain that McCain is a highly dangerous person to our Republic. He should censured and kicked out of the Senate. Otherwise McCain could lead our country into a very Big Little Big Horn -- World War III.
McCain was a coward and a traitor in North Vietnam. He was called “song bird” and made propaganda films for the communist bastards. They are on You Tube. I have posted them but they are there to see. I have nothing but disdain for this son of a bitch.
McCain is our back screen door. Knocked around by the winds to find it is hanging one hinge only; still standing, still giving the flies a place on which to light.
Isn’t it odd that the two most well-known veterans of Vietnam are McCain and John Kerry? Sad.
My theory is that McCain is the one who has been leaking all this stuff to the media and he’s panicking thinking he’s gonna get caught. So anything for a distraction.
What's the justification for this nation being in NATO, from NATO's perspective? What do they provide of value? Why does McCain think American soldiers should die for its integrity?
I used to live, for a few years, in Pennsyltucky (Camp Hill) and I was just down in Columbus, GA this week.
Follow the money, how much does John owe for campaign contributions?
That makes perfect sense. It would explain the media darling status
Agree. If McCain didn’t have his big shot father and grandfathers influence and string pulling behind him ( both navy admirals) he would have been “gone” before the Vietnam war due to mis behavior and bad performance. Typical “influential rich boy can do no wrong” syndrome.
