White House looks past conservatives on tax reform - to Democrats

Fresh off a defeat on U.S. healthcare legislation, the White House warned rebellious conservative lawmakers that they should get behind President Donald Trump's agenda or he may bypass them on future legislative fights, including tax reform.

The threat by White House chief of staff Reince Priebus to build a broad coalition on tax reform that could include moderate Democrats came as the Republican head of the tax-writing committee in the House of Representatives said he hoped to move a tax bill through his panel this spring.

House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Kevin Brady said his committee had been working on tax reform in parallel with the failed healthcare reform push.

"We've never stopped working," Brady told Fox News' "Sunday Morning Futures with Maria Bartiromo." "We will continue to make improvements."

Brady said the committee plans to move on the bill in the spring. He said he wanted the House blueprint to be the basis for Trump's tax reform plan rather than have competing versions from Treasury and the White House.

Both Trump and Priebus have scolded hardline conservatives who rejected legislation backed by the White House to overhaul Obamacare.

Speaking on "Fox News Sunday," Priebus held out the possibility of working with moderate Democrats as well as Republicans to pass other aspects of Trump's agenda, such as his proposed budget, the revamp of the tax code and a renewed effort at healthcare reform.

"If we can come up with a bill that accomplishes the goals of the president with Republicans alone, we'll take it and we'll move forward with it," Priebus said.

The two creeps next in line for speaker are also rotten.

Thee only entity worse than the House is the RINO Senate.

moderate Democrats would be 4 at the most- that’s all there are!

Do you have their names? I am not sure there are even 4 moderate Democrats.

Since 2010 the Moderate Democrats have lost their seats to Republicans.

Only the leftist Democrats in safe districts and states have keep their seats.

I have no doubt that we’re are going to get some version of a public option. At least with this version, PP would have been gone. You think we are ever getting rid of PP now? Thats why even though I hate Pelosi, the democrats stick together and get stuff done, even if flawed. They knew Obamacare was crap but they passed it anyway, knowing the a public option would replace it. But what does the FC do? Deny our president an important, momentum building victory and now look where we are? Fighting amongst each other and looking like idiots! I’m with you Mariner, the repubs screwed up big time!

Sadly, it's where we are now.

We incrementally got here, but conservatives don't trust incrementally heading back. I understand this, but the enemy of “Perfect” is “Good.”

I honestly think Trump was willing to punch Ryan into submission if the Ryancare Round #3 didn't happen as expected.

The conservatives are always asked to compromise; never the RINOs.

Trump may pull a Schwarzenegger and say that he did his best to get things accomplished but the people have spoken. After that a more moderate to liberal agenda is implemented.

Essentially, I agree with your thoughts there.

Put up the good bill, and let the RINOs and Democrats defeat it.

Then remove the RINOs and Democrats.

That’s how you move the tide to our side.

They just gook a complete pass on that tactic. Ryan knew what he was doing. He was scared to death Trump could get a bill on his desk that did exactly what he promised it would.

He wouldn’t let that happen.

It’s up to us to make sure it does.

My advice to myself and all here.

Let’s see what is in the Tax Reform Bill before we pre-judge it.

It may be good. It may be bad. It may be in the middle.

Let’s wait and see what the details are.

Dude, if you want to live in a world where a repeal only bill could pass, that’s between you and your doctor.

According to Heritage Action Scoreboard Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren rank 23% on the Heritage conservative scale.

There are three Democrats with a slightly higher conservative score than Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren.

Henry Cueller 28%; Daniel Lipinski 29%; and Collin Petersen 34%

The Moderate Democrat bench looks pretty empty.

The Dems and GOP never Trump #1 goal by a mile is to detach POTUS from his base and isolate him. Then steal the beltway agenda from a weakened POTUS.

The “freedom caucus” just handed them their best gift since the kenyan was reelected. Rather than accept Ryancare warts and all and live to fight another day they chose to be arsonists.

Now we have no bill and are stuck with kenyancare until it gets a “bipartisan” fix.

I’m sure the gum flapper in the FC will have a lot to say about that. Not that they will matter.

This is all pys-ops and Art of the Deal

Just what I was going to say. Unfortunately for Trump his Art of the Deal is out in the open for all to see so he will have to use tricks not in the book.

A Mariner will understand this story.

Imagine then a fleet or a ship in which there is a captain who is taller and stronger than any of the crew, but he is a little deaf and has a similar infirmity in sight, and his knowledge of navigation is not much better. The sailors are quarreling with one another about the steering––every one is of the opinion that he has a right to steer, though he has never learned the art of navigation and cannot tell who taught him or when he learned, and will further assert that it cannot be taught, and they are ready to cut in pieces any one who says the contrary. They throng about the captain, begging and praying him to commit the helm to them; and if at any time they do not prevail, but others are preferred to them, they kill the others or throw them overboard, and having first chained up the noble captain’s senses with drink or some narcotic drug, they mutiny and take possession of the ship and make free with the stores; thus, eating and drinking, they proceed on their voyage in such a manner as might be expected of them....

Ship of fools is an allegory, originating from Book VI of Plato’s Republic, about a ship with a dysfunctional crew:

“Ryan should have come out with repeal right off the bat.

The fact that he didn’t should tell folks all they need to know.”

Exactly, how many times did the repeal bill passed? it ended up on Obama’s desk with eventual veto of course. So now, why isn’t there just a repeal bill sitting on Trump’s desk? is this just a kabuki show? IF they were going to pass this shit sandwich and fix it later. Why can’t they just pass the repeal and fix the replacement later? That has a better chance of passing as we can see from history.
