White House looks past conservatives on tax reform - to Democrats
Reuters ^ | March 26th, 2017 | By Lindsay Dunsmuir and Doina Chiacu

Fresh off a defeat on U.S. healthcare legislation, the White House warned rebellious conservative lawmakers that they should get behind President Donald Trump's agenda or he may bypass them on future legislative fights, including tax reform.

The threat by White House chief of staff Reince Priebus to build a broad coalition on tax reform that could include moderate Democrats came as the Republican head of the tax-writing committee in the House of Representatives said he hoped to move a tax bill through his panel this spring.

House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Kevin Brady said his committee had been working on tax reform in parallel with the failed healthcare reform push.

"We've never stopped working," Brady told Fox News' "Sunday Morning Futures with Maria Bartiromo." "We will continue to make improvements."

Brady said the committee plans to move on the bill in the spring. He said he wanted the House blueprint to be the basis for Trump's tax reform plan rather than have competing versions from Treasury and the White House.

Both Trump and Priebus have scolded hardline conservatives who rejected legislation backed by the White House to overhaul Obamacare.

Speaking on "Fox News Sunday," Priebus held out the possibility of working with moderate Democrats as well as Republicans to pass other aspects of Trump's agenda, such as his proposed budget, the revamp of the tax code and a renewed effort at healthcare reform.

"If we can come up with a bill that accomplishes the goals of the president with Republicans alone, we'll take it and we'll move forward with it," Priebus said.

It is true. Kennedy lowered marginal rates in the 1960's and revenues ballooned. Same thing in the 80's. Reagan reduced rates and revenue doubled in 8 years.

So now you know. So stop saying tax rate reductions do not increase federal revenue.

“And neither does about 85% of the electorate.”

Then they do not deserve and should not have the franchise.

I'll bet very few of those Freedom Caucus members are at risk of losing their seats. For heaven's sake -- David Brat came out of nowhere and beat Eric Cantor like a rented mule in a GOP primary, and has been in that seat ever since.

First off, did you read the bill or are you quoting figures you found in the main stream press?

I'm not sure if I quoted any figures, but yes -- I did read the bill. And the statement that this bill would "repair" Obamacare for 2017 is patently false. It would carry into 2018 as well -- which is exactly the flaw in the whole thing. There would be no Phase 3 because the GOP would get slaughtered in 2018 if they passed a Phase 1 that didn't include immediate relief from escalating premiums in 2017-18.

Well said. After all he enacted that we all loved he’s trying to get stuff changed for the better and but the stonewallers want nothing but gridlock.

I can understand from a business perspective that gridlock is great, spending comes when business knows what to expect. When taxes, fees, regulations are constantly changing it makes business owners nervous. But you would think that adjustments that seem to be business friendly is being undermined by ideology because God forbid the dreaded word of compromise be used.

If you’ll think about it, Trump was addressing the poor.

He wasn’t addressing the folks who can pay their own way.

Ryan’s bill was addressing the folks who can pay their own way, and he still couldn’t get it right.

Trump was talking about getting government out of health care, but when it came to the poor, he was warning that everyone would have access.

We have taken care of the poor through Medicaid and grants. When Trump said everyone would be covered, it’s nothing more than we’ve done for the last 30-40 plus years.

A poor person goes to the E. R. They don’t have funds. States and the federal government have been covering them.

This is why it didn’t bother me a lot when he addressed this. I knew it had been taking place for a very long time.

What can we do about the poor? Should we just let them do without services? It’s a real dilemma and I don’t think anyone has a great solution for it.

I think this group can be focused on and the numbers could be reduced, but eliminating to all probably can’t be done.

Get them to work. Get them insured. That’s what has to be done IMO.

If Trump really wanted that bill then I would ask two questions: 1. Why didn't he make a single nationally televised appeal to lay out the terms of the bill and explain to Americans why it was a good idea?

Because he cannot get a televised tweet in less than 140 characters

2. Why would he ever accept a rushed, half-assed process with an artificial deadline set by Paul Ryan that was only established so it would coincide with the anniversary of the original Obamacare legislation?

What are you talking about here. Ocare was passed around Christmas so not sure what you are meaning here by anniversary. And as far as deadlines, President Trump pushed to have a vote last week. Which was good. IT let it DIE

Obama signed the original ACA into law on March 23, 2010.

Sounds good.

So, what’s the plan?

Are we going to wait until November to see how people react to their premiums and then see how it goes?

I’m looking at the basketball scoreboard and the clock, that damn clock, is still ticking.

Better start putting some points on the board, even if its only a half or even a third of the points you would prefer to score.

What’s the song Trump plays after his speeches? Perhaps that was directed at us. Who knew. Nonetheless, the game is going on, better start playing it.

Your sports analogy remains as thoroughly stupid as it was when I pointed it out to you, and shows that you didn't get a word I said.

Trump was on the wrong side of this and the FC was on the correct one. Period.

Well guess what. You’re getting them for sure now. Ted Yoho is my rep. He actually made a scene by walking out of Trump’s meeting with the FC. He wasn’t even interested in what the President had to say. He went on Facebook claiming victory. Victory for who? He failed and he will most likely lose to Dem next year.

I read every word you wrote. And for what it’s worth, it was a good post and reply.

I appreciate your sense of idealism, right and wrong, and disdain for sports analogies, but you have either missed or intentionally overlooked providing a solution to the problem. A solution that can actually become law.

Obamacare is law, went to the Supreme Court. You and I share the view it is unconstitutional, but unfortunately John Roberts disagreed and that ship sailed. He’s the one with the black robe.

Doing nothing is not an option. A President cannot run around saying an explosion is going to happen and just wait for it to occur. This is not leadership When you are the majority party, you own the problems, even ones not of your creation.

I’m all ears if you have a grand plan to move this thing back where it should be within a year. I don’t see that path. I don’t like where we are with it. But we got our tails handed to us by Obama on this topic, and digging our way out is much easier said than done.

I was going to finish with a Touchdown! reference but decided not to do so as it would be overplaying my hand. /s

Yoho defeated a 24-year Republican incumbent in the primary to win that seat in 2012, so it sounds like a pretty solid Republican seat. I suspect most of the FC members are in solid GOP districts.

It makes sense that he'd get on Facebook and claim victory when the AHCA was so abysmally unpopular with his constituents.

The AHCA was the equivalent of a basketball team down by 3 with one second on the clock dunking the ball instead of attempting a 3-point shot.

Thanks. I went to cash early this year when I figured there was very little upside for me in the short term (I'm re-arranging my finances completely in the coming months, and didn't want to get caught in the middle of a major correction).

P.S. -- the last time I did this was early 2000, FWIW.

I would agree with that. It was Ryan himself who stated that the original March 23rd vote date was based on the seventh anniversary of Obamacare.
