Can Republicans govern if they can’t keep a promise they’ve made for 7 years?
McClatchy DC ^ | March 26th, 2017 | By Lesley Clark

WASHINGTON - Republicans exulted in November when they won the White House and both congressional chambers, promising aggressive moves on health care, taxes and immigration.

But a spectacular stumble on the first agenda item amid intra-party squabbles begs the question of whether the party will be able to get anything done if it can’t deliver on a promise it has made for nearly a decade.

“We were a 10-year opposition party, where being against things was easy to do,” said House Speaker Paul Ryan, faced with the biggest loss of his career. “And now in three months’ time we tried to go to a governing party. We will get there, but we weren’t there today".

Ryan got his job after House Speaker John Boehner stepped down, often pressed by a raucous conservative wing to take a harder line. But though conservative members groused about Ryan’s handling of the legislation – saying he had boxed out various factions, many expressed confidence Friday that he’d retain his seat – for practical reasons, as well as political.

Trump screwed everything up by winning.

The people who put him in the White House are not impressed by the kabuki theatre of the GOP.

The killer fact came last September when Ryan totally rolled over for Obama, giving Obama more money than he asked for in the budget, including Planned Parenthood and all the global warming scams. Ryan should have been replaced immediately after the election.

They had 7 years. They have had since November to put this together. A leader plans, a leader strategies, a leader would have put together a group to put this bill together long before to became public. We could have lost a few, but a public flop that reflects bad on the President in inexcusable

This is a failure of leadership in congress. Next time get it approved by the house, invite the senate to participate (they may want some things left out that they can fix) LEARN HOW TO LEAD!

8 years of Obama regime...he vetoed everything republicans passed. And repubs did not have veto proof majority at anytime and still don’t.

“I voted to REPEAL Obamacare.”

If you hold your breath for that you will die shortly.

The Republican Party will never repeal Obamacare. They used it as a foil to get elected, multiple times.

And they will run against it again in 2018. And stupid people will vote for them as a result.

It’s long past the time to tell this Congressional assemblage of totally useless republican losers to either tow the line or blow, and that’s all she wrote. Nothing else will do. They can be removed and replaced like spark plugs, and their pensions voided as well. Let them work until they die, which is what they want us to do, to keep their paychecks coming. Rotten lying scumbag bastards!

Uniparty: a game of good pol bad pol

Whatever is going on with President Trump, and what he supports and why, one thing is certain: the Establishment is going down. The party is over.

God Bless America.

I think whether this health care debacle really damages the Republicans in Congress and the president depends if they can get a good tax bill passed without a civil war within the party. If they get back on track, then this most recent failure will fade in memory. If this was the start of the new normal and they prove incapable of accomplishing anything together, then they may be handing the country back to the leftists on a silver platter before long.

I’ve not seen Republicans ‘govern’ in my lifetime. Why would they start now?

Hence, why we now have President Trump!

Well, Trump made it clear throughout the entire campaign that he wanted a replacement and not just a repeal of Obamacare. He said that over and over. Maybe your Congressman was just for a pure repeal with no replacement, but most Republicans I’ve heard from were never for that. Even Rand Paul isn’t for that.

Well, in all fairness, not only have they not healed the sick and raised the dead in 66 days, they haven’t done anything.

When you control all three branches of government, you implement your agenda.

Apparently the GOP does not have an agenda.

Under the Gingrich House and Reagan Presidency, they governed and governed well.

I didn’t realize you were so young as that would not be in your lifetime.

That’s only years! Still not ten.

Obama only vetoed 12 times, and at least once his veto was overridden.

the rino romneybot uniparty leadership never had any intention of following thru on the promise. the promise was leverage to get us to keep voting them back to dc.

Is Trump going to be a socialist or is he just trying to get everyone to reveal their cards?
I want the fed out of health care.
Government never fixes anything.
I only see two possible good uses for government in health care.
Laws protecting competition and tort reform.
Repeal first.

Fair question, and similar to what Texas Eagle stated, even at their most incompetent, they are better than commie rats. Barely.
