>> This is a matter between him and his wife. I would like to see them become members of a version that doesn’t hew the liberal line, but I know people who hew to a liberal church because of its tradition in their families and early lives, who continue in it, but don’t espouse all of its liberal views.
I’m not like that, myself, but some people are.
I do not blame Judge Gorsuch for his choice to be with his wife in a church setting.
I do not believe this informs his views nor will inform his actions on the Supreme Court.
<<

Did you make the same argument when Barack Obama was under fire for attending Rev. Wright's "kill whitey" church for years?

Obama supporters made the case that Senator Obama's church membership was a personal matter between him and his wife, and then Senator Obama pointed out that he knows plenty of people who hew to a church because of its tradition in their families and early lives, who continue in it, but don’t espouse all the views that their pastor holds. Obama supporters repeatedly said that its not right to blame Barack Obama for his choice to be with his wife in a church setting, or for continuing to remain a member of the church where his children were baptized, and that his pastor's controversial comments about white America do not inform his views nor will inform his actions as President of the United States.

If you were not willing to defend Obama for doing the same thing as Gorsuch (choosing to keep attending his wife's Marxist church for years no matter how screwy their pastor is), why the double standard? Is it okay now because the person doing it this time has an "R" next to their name?

He isn’t. He’s already said as much while discussing his views. Just what one would expect from an Episcopalian who hasn’t moved on to a Bible-believing church.

That was Schlafly’s son who wrote that.

But we still should be concerned. Gorsuch is liberal.

It’s not good, but it also is not determinative.

It could very well mean his church attendance is shallow based on appearances, childhood ties, or friendships.

I truly hope that Gorsuch turns out to be another Scalia/Thomas/Alito and we can look back on this thread a few years from now and have a good laugh about we worried about nothing.

But this DOES worry me. I mean, seriously, show of hands, guys... how many of YOU would sit through Sunday after Sunday at a left-wing, pro-abortion, pro-LGBT church? I don't care how lovely and wonderful his wife is and how much she feels at home in this church, it doesn't speak well for Gorsuch that he finds this church acceptable for himself and his family. Lex orandi, lex credendi, lex vivendi. How we pray is how we believe and how we live.

A big deal in the UK - of course not only his wife but her English family are Church of England. Here’s a photo of the couple on their wedding day.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2017/02/01/british-family-donald-trump-supreme-court-nominee-neil-gorsuch/

Her parents are the grandparents of his children, and are his in-laws.

The couple themselves appear in all of their public events to be extremely close. He chokes up when speaking about how much he credits her with his life and career success.

Some here take all of this as horrible news.

Hogwash.

This kind of thing does happen in real life.

He has in no way reflected such “horror” in his judicial career.

I thank the good Lord above for that blessing.

“He might have mundane reasons for attending there.”

Yes, that’s true. And many would not approve of picking a church for reasons like that, but you know that’s really between him and God.

Many Episcopalians remain in the church because they have deep family ties. For some, their families have attended that church for generations, sometimes their family gave money or land for the church to be built. Those ties are painful to sever. I know because I did it.

I don’t agree. To kill this nomination because we don’t agree with them personally is to say judges can’t rule according to the law, that they’re all biased by nature. If that’s truly the case, we’re screwed anyway.

Gorsuch is the right pick because his history shows he adheres to the law. We all need to pray for him that he continues that on SCOTUS.

Gorsuch is as close to Scalia as Trump is to being a true conservative. I think it will be a very mixed bag unfortunately. Socially we are going to be very disappointed l’m afraid. We may end up with dudes in girls locker rooms and showers after all.

Gorsuch's family was Catholic for generations and he was raised a cradle Catholic and graduated from a Catholic school. He converted to the Episcopalian faith while at Oxford.

Virtually every case of a Catholic-to-Episcopalian convert is when the individual converting holds views to the left of Catholic theology, so they join a denomination with a virtually identical worship style but much more "progressive" social beliefs (pro-abortion, pro-gay marriage, women priests, etc.)

While its certainly POSSIBLE for a staunch Antonin Scalia type conservative to convert from Catholic to Episcopalian, I have yet to meet a single example of one. It's possible the same way that its possible for a snow storm to happen in Miami.

When asked by Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., to expound on his views regarding precedent, he explained that “once a case is settled, that adds to the determinacy of the law.”

“What was once a hotly contested issue is no longer a hotly contested issue. We move forward,” Gorsuch said.
