Student has grade docked for using 'mankind' in English paper
Campus Reform ^ | Mar 28, 2017 | Shanna Nelsen

A Northern Arizona University student lost credit on an English paper for using the word “mankind" instead of a gender-neutral alternative.

Cailin Jeffers, an English major at NAU, told Campus Reform that she received an email from one of her professors, Dr. Anne Scott, informing her that she had been docked one point out of a possible 50 on a recent paper for “problems with diction (word choice)” related to her use of the word “mankind” as a synonym for “humanity.”

English and psychology were about the only leftist dominated departments at Ole Miss late 70s when I was there

You’re thinking Sociology too right

Not exactly

The dept head then was an eccentric libertarian

He died a few years ago

Fine arts was prolly lib but i only knew girls from dance there

None of the faculty

My favourite mangling of the Bible along these lines is “And I will make you fisherpeople,” which always brings to my mind the Fisher Price people I played with back in 1974.

Next time, try “gender-neutral carbon life forms”.

That's racist! Silicone based lifeforms are deeply offended and being excluded.

Funny you should mention that.

In 1973 as a young Economics student at UNC I had to take Freshman English and was randomly assigned to one of the 60 or so sections being taught that semester. What was unusual was that I was assigned as one of two males and 16 females to a, then experimental, feminist studies, English section.

The grad student teaching the section had no clue what she had in me. Where the other male was a guppy and quickly dropped the section, I was a tiger shark.

One of the books assigned was Germaine Greer's Feminist Manifesto. The rest were along the same line. I had looked them over before class started. The GS asked if any of us knew of Greer's Feminist Manifesto. A few of us put up our hands. The GS was surprised that I had put up hand and asked me what I thought of it.

I said it was full of spelling errors starting with the cover. The GS grabbed her copy and looked at it before asking what was misspelled.

I said that there was no 'F' in 'Communist'. And that's when the fight started.

I ended up with an A minus in the class mostly because of my superior command of English and Rhetoric. That and I repeatedly threatened to file grievances against her and appeal my grades to the faculty and, more importantly, the student newspaper.

““Mankind” does refer to all people. It NEVER has meant only males. The professor should learn English.”

Yes. The etymology of the word clearly shows it come from the Old German word for “person”.

I almost sent her an email telling her she should get booted out of the teaching profession but I didn’t want to come across as a bully piling on and chances are she would use it bolster her position that right wingers are bad.

I wonder if contacting her boss would do any good though as long as it was respectful. Letting them know they have a teacher undermining the meaning of the English language to advance a sick and twisted feminist/Gay agenda precludes her from teaching IMHO. I know they already know this and they would never fire her over it but in their world they have to act on complaints even if the end result is a foregone conclusion and it’s all kabuki theater.

Wow. If I went back to school at this time I’d probably not only flunk out, trigger a snowflake blizzard but probably be arrested by the PC police for mancing words.

At the end of the semester, the students are handed a review sheet where the students write anonymously about their experience in that classroom with that professor. The students do not sign their names. The reviews are used to evaluate the professor's performance.

Now, this chippy may have sympathetic bosses, but then she may not. Writing a scathing review is worth a shot. Plus, if the student can get other students to do the same. There is time to do a little classroom crowdstriking.

If lots of people, or even just a handful, contacted the President of this University she would have to take some kind of action and look into this. Clearly this Feminist/Gay teacher is in the wrong for downgrading the student for using the word ‘mankind’ and should have a light shown down on her for this misdeed.

I bet a few phone calls would get their attention too.

Schools could drop the requirement to take sociology, psychology or one of the other humanities and no one would miss a beat.

I took Sociology 101 as a freshman....what a waste of time. Easy A, but a waste.

I’m thinking about cirriculum. Even leftist dominated departments tended to have standard cirriculums up till the 1980’s when pretty much most English departments went off the rails (ex: dumping Shakespeare for social justice). By the 1990’s the Chronicle of Higer Education reported that only a minority of English departments required any Shakespeare.

Sociology may employ exclusively leftist worldview individuals but it’s a field still capable of producing honest research.

Jack Handey, Deeper Thoughts: All New, All Crispy (1993)

Maybe in order to understand mankind, we have to look at the word itself. Basically, it's made up of two separate words — "mank" and "ind." What do these words mean? It's a mystery, and that's why so is mankind.
