In what was widely hailed as a victory for Spain, the EU said Spain must have a say over whether any deal after Brexit applies to the British territory of Gibraltar, over which London and Madrid have rowed for 300 years.

“After the United Kingdom leaves the union, no agreement between the EU and the United Kingdom may apply to the territory of Gibraltar without the agreement between the Kingdom of Spain and the United Kingdom,” the guidelines released by EU president Donald Tusk say.

The tiny British overseas territory on Spain’s southern tip has long been the subject of an acrimonious sovereignty row between London and Madrid, which wants Gibraltar back after it was ceded to Britain in 1713.

Spain has proposed that Gibraltar be allowed to remain in the EU in exchange for shared sovereignty with Britain over the Rock. But residents overwhelmingly voted to remain with Britain in two sovereignty referendums in 1967 and 2002, and Britain has repeatedly reassured the Rock that its status was non-negotiable. …

Another reason for the UK to invoke rebus sic stantibus. Article 50 is not immutable.

The Brits should fortify Gibraltar with men and ordnance. I doubt that the lily-livered Europeans would challenge them.

It is not an EU issue. It is exclusively a U.K.-Spain issue. Again, the EU shows how it’s meddling is it’s own undoing.

Gibraltar is extremely important. The reason we never think of it as a strategic choke point is the British have kept the Mediterranean open to all comers for a very long time. Imagine how different world trade might be if somebody closed off the Med with mines and cannons. Yes, it seems improbable, but the Brits owning Gibraltar is one reason it is improbable.

Especially since Spain is developing a Muslim problem.

“Especially since Spain is developing a Muslim problem.”

In a hundred years, all of continental Europe is likely to be Muslim. They will be failed states living in Venezuelan-like poverty and, assuming Brexit is the first step towards cultural health, then Britain will be, again, the last outpost of freedom for the continent.

You left out the great war that happens in between. One hundred fifty tops.

Western Europe will fall to Islam

This sounds like a childish ploy to hurt England’s plans to leaver the E U. May should ignore it.

Yes. And if the British Navy surrounds Gibraltar, the EU will back down.

Gibraltar is British Territory and thus not even worthy of discussion. Argentina tried to take the Falklands and that did not turn out to well for them.

People think Gibraltar is at the entrance to the Mediterranean from the Atlantic; it isn’t. It is actually inside the Mediterranean, while Spain has territory southwest of Gibraltar which forms a gateway when paired with the Spanish cities in North Africa (that they kept when they left Spanish Morocco/Western Sahara).

The “pillars of Hercules” Spain holds on both sides of the Strait, when wrapped in a ribbon, were the basis for our dollar sign.

From some of the articles I’ve read recently, I am not sure Britain has a navy. They retired all of their anti-ship missiles rather than pay to upgrade them. This takes their striking range down to the distance of a naval gun. They have also had numerous problems lately conducting operations, as things break and don’t get promptly repaired.
