Tipping is racist.
That's the argument being forwarded by some liberal activists and politicians as a way of stigmatizing laws that exempt certain professions, mainly restaurant workers, from the federal minimum wage.
However, there is little historical evidence for the argument.
"I don't think tipping was particularly racial It was more a matter of customers showing off their wealth," said Gerald Friedman, professor of economics and history at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.
Nevertheless, activists pushing for a higher minimum wage have pushed the argument now that their movement has gained ground.
Minimum wage fans have argued that that's not merely wrong but a vestige of 19th racism. Minneapolis Mayor Betsy Hodges said in a February op-ed that "tipping as an institution is rooted in the history of slavery." Hodges has advocated that her city adopt a $15 minimum wage that would not allow exceptions for tips.
"The notion of tipping is not native to America, but was imported from Europe just as slaves were emancipated. At that time, restaurants and railroads insisted that the now-former slaves who were working in those industries were not worthy of earning a wage and should subsist on the kindness of customers' tips alone," she said.

Precisely. The commies here want everything viewed through the lens of rave because they couldn’t convince people that wealth was a bad thing
What are the rich libs going to do when they put waiters on minimum wage throughout the blue states and all of them leave the industry? The one or two restaurants that tried it have already gone back to the tips payment. I ate out last night in NYC, left a good tip and a happy and sweet waitress.
A tip is a gesture of gratitude. Guess they don’t know anything about that.
They win.
No more tipping for me . Instead I will print little cards that say:
“Tipping is racist per Saru Jayaraman of Retaurant Opportunities United Center. If you feel otherwise, please contact her for your tip.”
Being alive, is racist to these rat bastards.
Combines Marxism & Racism with a deep, vile hatred of America, our Constitution and Judeo-Christian morals & values.
Marx made a big deal of being against it, ideologically, as I recall.
Had a friend waiting tables in NYC a while back and Pete Seeger came in with 20 guests. All the other waiters gave him the job, which looked like a good haul. But they knew that Commie Pete didn’t tip and my friend found out the hard way.
In my waiter years in college, I was told tip means “To Insure Promptness”.
Spot on. These people probably don’t even tip well if at all.
Tipping is meritocratic. If leftists think meritocracy is somehow “racist” then it’s they who have racist views because they clearly don’t believe minorities are capable of merit as waiters and waitresses. Good ones can actually make a decent living with tips, in a busy, decent restaurant.
Madness. Madness.
Sheesh.

Okay don’t tip black people.
Minimum wage: if you can’t produce enough value, you’re not allowed to work.
Leftists solving poverty by keeping the insufficiently productive in poverty.
Wow, racism helped me pay for college!
I’ll have to re-asses my views on racism now.
Just a hint, boys and girls: robots don't need tips.
Rich vs poor, maybe. Racist? No. Why? Seldom have I had a waiter, beautician, paper person, etc who was a person of color. Maybe it is where I live. I tip well. They do not complain.
I am NOT wealthy by any stretch. Tipping is for good service, or not.
I left a nice tip for a really super young black lady at Cracker Barrel this morning.
I rarely go to Cracker Barrel but there wasn’t anything else better since the spouse had to run across the little bridge in downtown Charleston.
A shorter column for these people would be, “Things that are NOT ‘racist’”.
