President Donald Trump has told some members of Congress that he is considering military action in Syria in retaliation for this week's chemical attack, and recognizes the seriousness of the situation, a source familiar with the calls tells CNN.
The source said the President had not firmly decided to go ahead with it but said he was discussing possible actions with Defense Secretary James Mattis.
Trump is relying on the judgment of Mattis, according to the source.
US officials tell CNN the Pentagon has long-standing options to strike Syria's chemical weapons capability and has presented those options to the administration.
The sources stressed a decision has not been made.

Israel is sure of any story that furthers their agenda.
Why not? Regime change did so much to improve things in Libya, Iraq,...oh, wait a minute.
Trump was elected partly on a promise to keep us out of Middle Eastern civil wars, to instead focus on interventions that directly affect US national security. Assad's targeting of civilians may not be a very nice thing to do, but I fail to see how anything he does threatens US national security or any other western country. It isn't Assad who supports or masterminds terror attacks in the US and Europe.
Let those who want to get involved in a stupid civil war with no good guys fight & pay for it themselves.
And grab a rifle and lead the troops while they're at it.
Siding with McInsane, Graham and Rubio is ALWAYS a bad option.
Seems more likely that the chemical weapons were in the hands of the terrorists and hit by the airstrike.
Not the same as Assad using chemical weapons.
Israeli defense minister Avigdor Lieberman says 100 percent certain Syria gas attack ordered by Assad.

I’m pro-Israel but I would hope Trump doesn’t get the U.S. involved in this based on Lieberman”s “certainty” because he could certainly be lying through his teeth.
I hope anything we do will be symbolic or just rhetoric. We don’t have any options better than keeping Assad.
You are correct and that had slipped my mind for awhile.
“Maybe one option is to figure out just who did what...”
First you have the sentence (remove Assad), then you have the verdict (Assad did it), then you have the investigation. Makes sense (as per the Red Queen).
Obama bragged about removing all of Syria’s WMD out of Syria. Did I miss something, CNN? Are you saying Obama failed or lied?
He should watch Blackhawk Down before he makes a decision.
This’ll be fun!
I wonder what will happen when our guys start killing Russians, and vice versa.
Don’t you understand? “Unnamed sources” know what DT will do. These “unnamed sources” sit in on the meetings, and are inside DT’s head.
Here is my take on the Syria situation:
DT to Assad: “Bad boy. Bad, bad boy.”
DT to staff: “Now, where were we? Taxes, jobs, infrastructure, . . . .”
I hope Trump relents on making a decision based on intelligence from untrusted sources in the Middle East. That includes our own intelligence community.
“DT to Assad: Bad boy. Bad, bad boy.
DT to staff: Now, where were we? Taxes, jobs, infrastructure, . . . .
I concur on all points. When I read/hear in the press from “unnamed sources” I label it fake news. Today I’ve noticed a collective effort from the GOPe/never-trump brigades to convince folks Trump is going to disappoint us.
And yet, the winning continues :)
I think if he was launching a strike or sending troops, it would already have been done.
I agree. Trump is not going to advertise any military action before hand. It’s one thing of many I love about this man.
I am getting worried that Trump is getting sucked in to the McCain War Doctrine. The US Senate and HOR will be on recess for a few weeks. We can only pray that President Trump uses this time to use his common sense and figure out that it's only logical that the "rebels" are responsible for the chemicals.
Then, figure out who his friends are. For starters, I hope he makes the tough decision. Ivanka and Jared are toxic to conservative and non-global agendae....send them home.
