This Isn’t the Foreign Policy Trump Campaigned On
American Conservative ^ | April 6 2017 | Robert Merry

It may be too early to tell for sure, but Donald Trump is looking more and more like a phony. He’s also looking like a weakling. And a political ingrate. All this is coming into stark relief with accelerating events involving Syria. The United States launched dozens of missiles against Syrian military installations to retaliate for the chemical attack on rebel-held territory. Thus did Trump demonstrate that, to the extent that his foreign policy differs from that of his predecessor, it is more aggressive and adventuresome than Obama’s. That’s the opposite of how he campaigned.

Gee, who could have predicted that?

Not the foreign policy? Well, personally, I don’t care. He showed our flag, said now to atrocity. Now, want foreign policy that matters at home? Trump should honor his now broken promises to rescind Obama’s executive orders and actions giving amnesty to illegal aliens. Absolutely no excuse for not keeping his promise. None.

This was a measured response, and unfortunately necessary.

Oh for heaven sakes, it’s one dinky attack on one airfield to put Assad in his place so he won’t gas anyone else anytime in the future. And I suspect it will work. Plus it will help to make China think twice about what help they will be to us regarding N. Korea.

It was Trump who said America First, not America Alone.

Cognitive dissonance is common among people who have selective hearing when it comes to their personal agenda. It was the people not some group of bedwetting isolationists who elected Trump. It was the media that tried to define Trump as an isolationist.

If I remember correctly, candidate Trump promised to wipe ISIS off the face of the earth, calling it evil.

Now, I don't know IF there even WAS a chemical attack, but I agree that any evil a human does to another human (besides shoot to kill ala war), is Satanic and comes under the category of ISIS.

But that is in MY generalized mind

This isn’t the WMD free Syria Obama bragged about either.

Reality is a larger motivator than vague, idealistic promises.

“This Isn’t the Foreign Policy Trump Campaigned On”

Beirut wasn’t what Reagan campaigned on either.

But once in office, situations and circumstance will arise that will require you to make decisions that may veer you away, however slightly, from the expectations of talking heads and armchairs that the world will adhere to the rock-hard expectations of people who have no decisions to make and will lose no sleep either way.

Oh yes he did.

Trump always said that he would leave all options open. NOT announce what he was going to do. Always win . NOT get into nation building. America first.

Fair weather friends we are here on FREEREPUBLIC. We whine more than buttercups. Maybe the strike was justified. What if this was pre-WW2 and we just stopped Hitler?

I watched dozens of his campaign events (an hour each) and went to one and this action doesn’t surprise me at all.
I guess I never heard him explicitly campaign on sending 60 tomahawks to Syria in one attack, so the article may be technically true. But he often talked about showing military strength when needed and not announcing military actions in advance and protecting innocent Syrians and helping them be safe in Syria, not as refugees to the US.

I have noticed that everyone (me included, and liberals and conservatives) heard what they wanted to hear in Trump’s campaign. And there is a very broad range of expectations that he will be anyone from Hitler to Reagan and even better or worse than those on any specific issue.

My support for the President hasn’t changed a bit, but this was stupid! I don’t think it is necessarily a bad thing to tell your friends when they are wrong.
