Tillerson: China agrees on 'action' on North Korea as navy strike group sails

Secretary of state: ‘President Xi understands the situation has intensified’ Syria missile strike described by North as ‘intolerable act of aggression’

Edward Helmore and agencies Sunday 9 April 2017 15.31 BST

As the US navy deployed a strike group towards the western Pacific Ocean, to provide a presence near the Korean peninsula, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said China agrees with the Trump administration that “action has to be taken” regarding North Korea.

Tillerson told CBS’s Face the Nation, in an interview broadcast on Sunday, that when Donald Trump and Chinese president Xi Jinping met at Mar-a-Lago this week, they “had extensive discussions around the dangerous situation in North Korea”.

“President Xi clearly understands, and I think agrees, that the situation has intensified and has reached a certain level of threat that action has to be taken,” Tillerson said.

Tillerson described a “shared view and no disagreement as to how dangerous the situation has become”.

In view of the regional threat now posed by North Korean missile tests and nuclear ambitions, he said, the Chinese “do not believe the conditions are right today to engage in discussions with the government in Pyongyang”.

“We’re hopeful,” he added, “that we can work together with the Chinese to change the conditions in the minds of the DPRK leadership. And then, at that point, perhaps discussions may be useful.

Korea is a dangerous place. That place could go up in flames over night. That little fat punk in charge over there could get drunk one night and order his missiles to fly to the south and a war begin because he was loaded.

Yep, if Truman had any balls the Cold War would have been over by 1952. His refusal to accept McCarthurs advise was due to his arrogance and emboldened the Soveits and Red China.

If Trump destroys this evil Commie regime he I’ll automatically become the second greatest president after Washington.

China will mow down the North Korean refugees, perhaps even use some of the chemicals. CNN won’t be as outraged and there will not be missile strikes on the Chinese.

In my edited out post, I said they would have to stack them like so much cord wood, Leonidas style. That seemed a little brutal even for me so I cut it out. It is, however, the reality.

"It appears that the success of the Chicaps and their back and forth dealings in South Korea is worth much more than the drag of the Koreans to the North."

China has always understood that a unified Korea is likely to eventually fall under their influence. Much easier to woo them with ¥ than bullets.

Yes..I heard her speak on TedX.....moving story and much like many who have escaped N.Korea.

Also interesting is listening to those who speak about the difficulty of adjusting. Some truly cannot and return. Which is why best this be done in such a way as they can remain in their own country.

And it would set South Korea back for 2 generations. I always thought China will pull the rug out from NK when SK is competing with China in trade and winning. Bang, unification and SK has 100+ billion drag.

“Damn! Why don’t we tell Kim what we’re going to do so he can strike first.”

Precisely. Talk it up to sound like the Chinese are selling him out, bring a task group marginally within his striking range, wait for him to miscalculate, and then end it with authority. Strike his artillery near the DMZ with everything conventional we have, from the air and with counterbattery fire.

My worry is the Chinese offering to “help” and ending up controlling some or all of the North. We should be prepared to put them in check in the South China Sea virtually instantly should the NK situation go hot, and make it crystal clear they will lose more than they could gain if they intervene in the North.

Red China should be first in line to take that “action.”

Agree. Kim is their neighbor, not ours. We shouldn't take on everyone else's job. China or Japan should have done something a long time ago.

North Korea soon will be threatening the East & West coasts. Ocean America, do you wish to wait and see what happens? The Clintons and Democrats armed both Korea and China with nukes.

How do you love your Democrats? They made money, but you get the burn! Ever imagine your children burning while thanking your Democrats?

The risk must be done now. If Trump pulls this deal off, will you Coasters thank Trump and curse your Democrats??

If your children ever learn the truth ...

Walmart pays China. It’s charity to NK would not get paid for so one should not expect much more than some rice. Of course, to the NKoreans that would be a feast.

Kim survives because China allows him to survive. Let the Chinese take him out. If Kim fires on the US then hammer him into oblivion.

Yep. MacArthur’s proposal wasn’t even as draconian as advertised. It was simply to nuke the primary ChiCom reinforcement route along the Yalu River, not the whole country as perverts of history often advertise. And, yes, we had a monopoly on nuclear arms at the time . . . soon to be ended with the treachery of the Rosenburgs, who rightfully earned their place in the electric chair . . . another piece of history often distorted.
